Chapter 9: The Hunter Becomes the Hunted

Chapter 9: The Hunter Becomes the Hunted
Jonathan Carter lowered the curtain just enough to watch the black SUV pull up across the street.
Three men stepped onto the sidewalk with the quiet confidence of professionals. They weren't wearing masks or trying to hide. They moved with purpose, scanning the apartment building from opposite directions.
Jonathan had seen men like them before.
Years ago.
Back when his life had been built on secrets instead of family dinners and birthday parties.
He quietly set the framed photograph of young Emily back onto the table.
"So," he murmured, "you finally found me."

Without turning on another light, he picked up a worn leather messenger bag that had been sitting beside the couch for years.
Everything he needed was already inside.
Old documents.
A flashlight.
A revolver that hadn't been fired in over a decade.
And another brass lion emblem identical to the one Detective Bennett had recovered from the bank vault.
Jonathan slipped out through the apartment's rear stairwell just as the front buzzer echoed through the building.
The hunters were only seconds too late.
Across town, Emily sat in Detective Bennett's SUV outside her damaged home while crime scene technicians continued processing evidence.
Sophie had fallen asleep in the back seat, exhausted by the endless fear of the past two days.
Emily looked at her daughter through the rearview mirror.
"I don't recognize my own life anymore."
Bennett nodded.
"Neither do I."
Emily turned toward him.
"If my grandfather is alive, why would he stay away for fifteen years?"
"I've been asking myself the same question."
"He could have stopped Preston."
"Maybe."
"He could have protected Sophie."
"Perhaps."
Emily shook her head.
"No."
"If he loved us, he wouldn't disappear."
Bennett didn't argue.
Instead, he handed her another folder.
"Our financial crimes unit finished tracing Preston's accounts."
Emily opened it.
The report listed dozens of wire transfers.
Offshore companies.
Shell corporations.
Real estate purchases.
The total amount exceeded twelve million dollars.
"How did he hide this?"
"He didn't do it alone."
Emily looked up.
"What do you mean?"
Bennett pointed to a series of signatures appearing repeatedly on company documents.
"Every fraudulent transaction required two approvals."
Emily recognized one signature immediately.
Preston Carter.
The second signature made her heart sink.
Richard Carter.
"My father."
"It appears he authorized nearly every transfer."
Emily closed the folder.
"So Dad wasn't covering for Preston."
Bennett nodded.
"He was working with him."
Meanwhile, at Chicago Police Headquarters...
Natalie Brooks sat across from Detective Laura Hayes for her second formal interview.
A recorder clicked on.
Hayes spoke first.
"You previously stated Preston blackmailed you."
"Yes."
"Did he ever mention another person helping him?"
Natalie hesitated.
"There was someone he was afraid of."
Hayes leaned forward.
"Who?"
"I never learned his real name."
"What did Preston call him?"
Natalie thought carefully.
"'The Chairman.'"
Hayes wrote the nickname down.
"What did Preston say about him?"
Natalie swallowed.
"He once told me..."
She paused.
"...that even my father didn't know who really controlled the money."
Hayes frowned.
"The money stolen from your family's company?"
Natalie nodded.
"Preston said he was only collecting it."
"For whom?"
"He wouldn't tell me."
Near midnight, Detective Bennett received an urgent call.
Within minutes, he and Emily were speeding through downtown Chicago.
"What happened?" Emily asked.
"Someone broke into Jonathan Carter's apartment."
Emily's eyes widened.
"My grandfather's?"
"Yes."
"Were they looking for him?"
"We believe so."
When they arrived, the building was surrounded by patrol cars.
Inside, the apartment looked as though a tornado had passed through.
Every cabinet had been emptied.
Books lay scattered across the floor.
Mattresses had been slashed open.
Picture frames shattered.
"They were searching for something," Emily whispered.
Bennett nodded.
"Just like your house."
A crime scene technician approached.
"We found blood."
Emily froze.
"Is it my grandfather's?"
"We don't know yet."
The technician held up an evidence bag containing a white envelope recovered beneath a loose floorboard.
"It was hidden."
Bennett carefully opened it.
Inside was another letter addressed in Jonathan's handwriting.
For Emily
Emily slowly unfolded the pages.
Her grandfather's familiar script filled the paper.
My dearest Emily,
If this letter reaches you, then my hiding place has been discovered.
I'm sorry.
You deserved a grandfather who attended your graduation, your wedding, and every birthday I missed.
Instead, I gave you silence.
Telling you the truth would have placed you in greater danger than you can imagine.
Emily blinked away tears.
She continued reading.
Everything Preston believes he knows is incomplete.
He thinks the money is the secret.
It never was.
The real inheritance is hidden inside the library.
Emily looked at Bennett.
"The library again."
He nodded.
Only someone carrying both lion emblems can open it.
One emblem belongs to me.
The other belonged to Eleanor.
Emily remembered the brass lion recovered from the bank.
Her grandfather had another.
The letter continued.
If you find me before they do, bring both emblems.
Trust Detective Bennett.
Trust Natalie Brooks.
Trust no one else.
Emily reached the final paragraph.
Her breath caught.
There is one last truth I never found the courage to tell you.
Richard Carter is not Preston's father.
Silence filled the apartment.
Emily looked at Bennett in disbelief.
"What?"
Before either of them could process the revelation, a uniformed officer rushed inside.
"Detective!"
Bennett turned.
"What is it?"
"We identified the blood."
"Whose is it?"
The officer swallowed.
"It's Jonathan Carter's."
Emily's heart sank.
"But..."
The officer continued.
"There was another blood sample mixed with it."
"Whose?"
The officer handed Bennett the preliminary DNA report.
Bennett stared at the name.
His expression turned grave.
Emily reached for the report.
The second sample belonged to...
Detective Marcus Bennett.
Emily looked up, stunned.
"How is that possible?"
Bennett slowly shook his head.
"I've never been inside this apartment before tonight."

Someone had planted evidence.
And suddenly, the detective investigating Preston had become the prime suspect in Jonathan Carter's disappearance.
