Chapter 2: A Mother's Choice

Chapter 2: A Mother's Choice

Emily barely heard the steady beeping of the heart monitor as Detective Marcus Bennett's words echoed through her mind.

"She wasn't an innocent bystander."

Her eyes remained fixed on the paused image on the detective's tablet.

There was no mistaking it.

Her mother, Diane Carter, stood directly beside Preston as he slipped the expensive phone into Sophie's jacket pocket. Instead of looking toward the dance floor with everyone else, Diane subtly shifted her body, shielding Preston from the view of nearby guests.

It wasn't an accident.

It was deliberate.

Emily felt the blood drain from her face.

"My mother..." she whispered. "She helped him."

Bennett nodded carefully.

"That's what the footage appears to show."

Emily had spent years making excuses for her parents.

When Preston bullied her as a child, they called it sibling rivalry.

When he borrowed money he never repaid, they insisted he was "finding himself."

When he ruined family holidays with his temper, they begged everyone else to keep the peace.

Every time, Emily was expected to forgive.

Every time, Preston walked away without consequences.

But this...

This time, they had used an innocent little girl.

The detective switched to another camera angle.

"This recording comes from the ballroom entrance."

The video played silently.

Emily watched herself helping Sophie cut a slice of wedding cake while the bride and groom posed for photographs. Sophie laughed at something Emily said, completely unaware of the danger surrounding her.

Seconds later, Preston quietly walked behind them.

He glanced over both shoulders.

Then he slipped his black smartphone into the pocket of Sophie's denim jacket.

The movement took less than two seconds.

Without Diane stepping between him and the nearby guests, someone would almost certainly have seen it.

Instead, she smiled warmly at a table of relatives while blocking everyone's line of sight.

Emily covered her mouth.

"Oh, my God..."

Bennett paused the footage again.

"There's more."

Another camera showed Preston returning to the head table.

He checked his watch.

Exactly forty-three seconds later, he suddenly stood up.

"My phone is gone!" he shouted dramatically.

Guests immediately looked around the ballroom.

Preston wasted no time.

He walked directly to Sophie.

Not to the waitstaff.

Not to his best man.

Not to the wedding coordinator.

Straight to an eight-year-old girl.

Emily remembered the look on his face as he'd reached into Sophie's pocket.

At the time, she thought he looked confident.

Now she understood why.

He already knew where his phone was.

Because he had put it there himself.

Bennett closed the tablet.

"The evidence strongly supports premeditation."

Emily looked at him.

"What happens now?"

"We'll obtain copies of all surveillance footage, collect witness statements, and request forensic testing on the phone and the wooden menu board."

"The board still has Sophie's blood on it."

"Exactly."

A quiet knock interrupted them.

A nurse stepped inside.

"Ms. Carter, there's someone asking to see you."

Emily frowned.

"Who?"

The nurse hesitated.

"Your father."

Emily looked through the small glass window in the hallway.

Richard Carter stood outside holding a bouquet of white lilies.

The same flowers he had given her mother every anniversary.

His shoulders seemed heavier than she remembered.

He looked tired.

Older.

For a brief second, Emily wondered if he had finally realized what Preston had done.

"I'll speak with him," she said.

Bennett nodded.

"I'll wait nearby."

Emily quietly closed Sophie's hospital room door behind her.

Richard offered the flowers.

"These are for Sophie."

Emily didn't take them.

"What do you want?"

He sighed.

"Your mother is devastated."

Emily stared at him in disbelief.

"Devastated?"

"This whole situation has gotten out of control."

"Our daughter was beaten."

"I know Preston shouldn't have lost his temper."

Emily's eyes narrowed.

"'Lost his temper?' That's what you call smashing a wooden board into an eight-year-old's head?"

Richard lowered his voice.

"The police don't need to know everything."

Emily felt as if the hallway had suddenly turned cold.

"What did you just say?"

"If you don't mention the surveillance footage..."

She stepped backward.

"You knew."

He didn't answer.

Instead, he rubbed his forehead.

"Families survive by protecting each other."

Emily laughed bitterly.

"Protecting each other?"

"You've always been the reasonable one."

"So because I'm reasonable, my daughter should accept being framed and assaulted?"

"No."

"Then explain it."

Richard's expression hardened.

"If Preston goes to prison, his life is over."

Emily looked toward Sophie's room.

"My daughter's childhood nearly ended tonight."

Silence filled the hallway.

Finally, Richard spoke.

"Your mother only stood where Preston asked her to."

Emily froze.

Those words confirmed everything.

He knew exactly what had happened.

Not only had her mother helped Preston.

Her father knew about the plan before the attack even occurred.

Emily slowly pulled out her phone.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm recording this conversation."

Richard's face turned pale.

"Emily, don't."

"You just admitted that Mom intentionally helped Preston."

"I didn't mean—"

"You did."

Detective Bennett stepped into the hallway.

"I heard enough."

Richard spun around in shock.

The detective calmly displayed his badge.

"Mr. Carter, I'd advise you not to say another word until you've spoken with an attorney."

Richard's mouth opened, but no sound came out.

He looked from the detective to Emily.

Then toward the hospital room where Sophie slept peacefully.

For the first time in his life, no one was willing to protect the Carter family's secrets.

As two uniformed officers approached from the elevator, Emily realized something she never thought possible.

May you like

The conspiracy was far bigger than Preston.

And it had started long before the wedding day.
