Chapter 5: Home at Last
Nearly two years after Drew crawled onto Peter's porch, the family gathered in the county courthouse one final time.
This hearing wasn't about criminal charges.
It was about adoption.
The judge looked over the paperwork before smiling warmly.
"Peter Calder, are you prepared to accept every legal responsibility of becoming these children's father?"
Peter answered without hesitation.
"I already have."
The courtroom laughed softly.
The judge turned toward Drew and Lily.
"Do both of you wish for Mr. Calder to become your permanent father?"
Lily grinned.
"He already is."
Drew nodded.
"He never stopped choosing us."
The judge signed the final order.
"Congratulations. As of today, you are officially a family."
Outside the courthouse, Peter looked up at the clear blue sky.
He imagined Aaron somewhere beyond it, finally knowing the truth his children had never been able to tell him.
"They're safe," Peter whispered.
As they walked toward the parking lot, Lily slipped one hand into Peter's while Drew took the other.
Years earlier, those small hands had clung to each other in desperation as they escaped a house filled with fear.
Now they held onto the man who had become their home.
Peter realized that family was never defined by blood alone.
