Chapter 1: The House on Willow Lane

The morning after Drew and Lily were admitted to the hospital, Peter barely slept. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Drew dragging his broken leg across the sidewalk while his little sister held onto the back of his shirt.

At sunrise, Detective Melissa Grant arrived at Peter's home.

"I need you to walk me through everything you know about Reena," she said.

Peter told her about every canceled visit, every unopened birthday gift, every excuse that had kept him away from his niece and nephew. As he spoke, each memory sounded less like coincidence and more like a carefully constructed wall.

Meanwhile, investigators executed a search warrant at Reena's house.

What they discovered made even veteran officers fall silent.

The basement door had a heavy deadbolt installed on the outside.

Behind it was a small concrete room with no windows.

There were two thin blankets on the floor.

An empty plastic bucket sat in one corner.

The shelves held little more than bottled water and stale crackers.

But the most disturbing discovery wasn't the room itself.

It was the security cameras.

Tiny cameras had been hidden in the basement, recording nearly every hour the children spent inside. Detectives later recovered months of footage showing Drew comforting Lily, sharing tiny portions of food, and inventing games to keep her from crying.

They also recovered Reena's phone.

Text messages revealed conversations with a friend where she complained that Aaron's children were "a burden" and admitted that locking them downstairs was the "only way to keep them quiet."

When Detective Grant visited Peter that evening, her expression was grim.

"We're arresting her tonight."

Peter nodded, unable to celebrate.
