Part 2 – The Morning Everything Collapsed

Part 2 – The Morning Everything Collapsed
Cole Whitmore arrived home at 8:37 a.m.
He was smiling.
His phone was full of messages from Sierra.
His expensive watch glimmered beneath the morning light.
He expected silence.
He expected breakfast.
He expected his exhausted wife sitting beside two crying babies.
Instead…
The apartment was empty.
No Christmas music.
No bottles on the counter.
No twins.
No Lauren.
His smile disappeared instantly.
"Lauren?"
No answer.
He walked through every room.
Nothing.
Then he saw the envelope.
He read the note once.
Then twice.
Then a third time.
For the first time in years, fear entered his body.
He called her.
Voicemail.
Again.
Voicemail.
Again.
Blocked.
He called Daniel.
Blocked.
He called Lauren's mother.
Blocked.
Suddenly, his phone rang.
It was his assistant.
"Mr. Whitmore, we have a problem."
"What now?"
"Someone transferred the inheritance funds into a personal trust that legally belongs to Mrs. Whitmore and the twins."
His stomach dropped.
"There must be a mistake."
"There isn't."
Then another message arrived.
His lawyer.
Lauren has formally filed for divorce. All communication must go through legal representation.
Cole stood frozen in the middle of an apartment that suddenly felt enormous.
The silence was unbearable.
There were no babies crying.
No wife asking if he had eaten.
No family waiting for him.
Only emptiness.
For years, he believed Lauren would never leave.
Because men like Cole often mistake devotion for weakness.
