As the nurse safely returned the newborn to the mother, Judge Vance opened the brown briefcase.
Inside were sealed court documents, DNA reports, and emergency custody orders.
"The court received an anonymous complaint three days ago," Judge Vance explained.
"We were informed that someone intended to separate these twins immediately after birth through fraudulent legal documents."
The mother looked confused.
"I never agreed to any adoption."
"You didn't," Judge Vance replied.
He turned toward the older woman.
"But someone forged your signature."
The police officer unfolded the clipboard that had been dropped during the confrontation.
A forensic examiner compared the signatures.
"They're fake."
Judge Vance nodded.
"The paperwork was prepared before the babies were even born."
The older woman finally broke.
"I was only trying to protect my family's inheritance!" she shouted.
Judge Vance looked at her without emotion.
"So you planned to steal one child to control a trust fund."
Her silence confirmed everything.
The officer stepped forward.
