Chapter 4: Sarah Loses Everything

Chapter 4: Sarah Loses Everything

By the next morning, the story had spread through our family.

Then the neighborhood.

Then Matthew's school.

Parents who had attended the birthday party began calling the police after learning what had happened while their children were upstairs celebrating.

Several admitted they'd heard banging from the basement.

Sarah had laughed and said,

"One of the kids is throwing a little tantrum."

No one questioned her.

They would spend years regretting that silence.

Child Protective Services opened an investigation.

Police obtained security camera footage from neighboring homes showing that Noah had never left the basement once he was taken downstairs.

Sarah was arrested later that week on charges of child endangerment, unlawful imprisonment of a minor, and reckless neglect.

She cried as officers placed her in the back of the patrol car.

She kept repeating,

"I made one mistake."

But this wasn't one mistake.

It was hours of choices.

Every minute she ignored my calls.

Every text she refused to answer.

Every cry she chose not to hear.

Matthew watched from the front window as his mother drove away.

My heart broke for him.

None of this was his fault.
