Chapter 3: The Truth Comes Out

Chapter 3: The Truth Comes Out
The emergency room became a blur of fluorescent lights, rushing nurses, and medical equipment.
Doctors surrounded Noah the moment they saw him.
His temperature had climbed above 104 degrees.
He was severely dehydrated.
His blood pressure had dropped dangerously low.
One nurse quietly asked me how long he'd been without water.
I couldn't answer.
Another doctor looked at the bruises on Noah's knees and elbows.
"How did these happen?"
Emily broke down.
"He was locked in a basement."
The room fell silent.
The doctor slowly lowered his clipboard.
"I'm sorry..."
"What did you say?"
Within minutes, hospital security arrived.
Then a social worker.
Then two police officers.
No one could believe the story.
When Noah was stable enough to speak, an officer gently asked him what had happened.
Noah looked at me first.
Then he whispered,
"I told Aunt Sarah my tummy hurt."
"I asked if I could call my dad."
"She took my phone."
"I cried because it was cold."
"She said if I kept crying... I'd stay longer."
Every word felt like another knife twisting deeper into my chest.

The officer quietly clicked off his recorder.
"I think we've heard enough."
