Chapter 1 – The Truth They Refused to See

Silence filled the kitchen after David's hands crashed onto the granite island.

No one moved.

The older woman slowly stood, her confidence fading as she finally looked past David's shoulder.

Sarah was no longer trying to wipe away the blood running from her nose.

She had simply stopped.

She stood frozen, holding their trembling little boy against her chest while tears streamed silently down her face.

Their son buried his face into her shoulder, too frightened to cry anymore.

David walked directly to them.

"What happened?" he asked softly, his voice completely different now.

Sarah struggled to speak.

"He... he fell this morning."

David looked at the bruise spreading across the child's cheek.

"Children don't get injuries like this from one fall."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"I slipped while carrying him."

The room became painfully quiet.

"I asked them for help."

She glanced toward the two women.

"They said I worried too much... that I should learn to handle things on my own."

David slowly turned around.

"You watched my wife bleed..."

His voice shook with disbelief.

"...and you stayed on your phones."

Neither woman could answer.

For the first time, they realized exactly what they had done.

David gently carried his son toward the living room.

"Get the car keys," he told Sarah.

"We're going to the hospital."

Neither of the women offered to help.

Neither apologized.

They simply stood there, avoiding his eyes.
