The arrest happened before sunset.

Alexander screamed that it was all a misunderstanding.

He blamed stress.

Alcohol.

His childhood.

Anyone except himself.

The officers weren't interested.

Neither were the detectives reviewing hundreds of hours of recordings collected by Emma's legal team.

By the following morning, every major business network carried the same headline:

TECH CEO ARRESTED AFTER DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INVESTIGATION.

Investors reacted immediately.

Vale Technologies' stock plummeted.

The board of directors held an emergency meeting.

Richard Carter attended.

Alexander did not.

He was sitting in county jail.

Within forty-eight hours, the board voted unanimously to remove Alexander as CEO.

Civil lawsuits followed.

Former employees came forward.

Several women admitted they had accepted confidential settlements after being harassed by Alexander for years.

The empire he had spent a decade building collapsed in less than a week.

Emma watched none of it.

She was recovering in a private maternity suite under constant medical supervision.

Her father rarely left her bedside.

One afternoon she finally asked,

"Why didn't you tell me you bought control of his company?"

Richard smiled sadly.

"I hoped I'd never need to."

"You planned for this?"

"I planned for the possibility that the man hurting my daughter would someday believe he was untouchable."

Emma looked down.

"I thought leaving would mean I failed."

Richard gently squeezed her hand.

"No."

"You survived."

"That's the greatest success a parent can ask for."

Two weeks later, Emma went into labor.

The delivery wasn't easy.

Twenty hours later, a tiny cry filled the room.

Her son arrived healthy.

Seven pounds.

Bright eyes.

Strong heartbeat.

Emma held him against her chest while tears rolled down her face.

"What should we name him?"

She smiled.

"Ethan."

"Strong."

"Because I never want him to confuse strength with cruelty."

Richard quietly wiped away his own tears.
