Chapter 1: The Man Behind the Name

Chapter 1: The Man Behind the Name

The silence inside the penthouse became unbearable.

Alexander glanced from the older man to the two security professionals standing beside him, forcing out a laugh.

"You've got the wrong place."

"No," the older man replied calmly. "I've spent three years making sure I knew exactly where my daughter lived."

Emma slowly pushed herself upright, one hand protecting her swollen stomach.

"Dad..."

It was the first time she had called him that in years.

Alexander frowned.

"Dad?"

The older man walked directly to Emma without another word. His eyes softened the moment he saw the bruises spreading across her cheek and the blood on her lip.

His hands trembled.

The man who negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without blinking couldn't stop shaking as he gently touched his daughter's face.

"I'm so sorry," he whispered.

"You warned me," Emma said quietly.

"I should've ignored your wishes."

Years earlier, Emma had begged her father not to interfere with her relationship.

She wanted someone to love her—not the daughter of billionaire CEO Richard Carter, founder of Carter Global Holdings, one of the largest investment firms in the country.

So she had hidden her identity.

She used her mother's maiden name.

She rented a modest apartment.

She worked as an architect without mentioning her family's fortune.

Then she met Alexander Vale.

He seemed charming.

Kind.

Driven.

He promised he loved her simplicity.

But six months after their wedding, everything changed.

Once Alexander believed Emma had nowhere to go, the control began.

Then came the insults.

The isolation.

The financial manipulation.

Finally...

The violence.

Alexander laughed louder.

"So what? You're some rich businessman?"

Richard slowly stood.

"I'm the majority shareholder of Vale Technologies."

Alexander froze.

"...What?"

"You've spent years bragging about owning your company."

Richard removed a folder from his briefcase.

"You own twenty-two percent."

"I personally own fifty-one."

Alexander's confidence vanished.

"That's impossible."

"You've never bothered to learn who invested during your emergency financing round four years ago."

Emma watched disbelief spread across her husband's face.

Richard continued.

"I never revealed myself because my daughter asked me not to."

"But the moment you raised your hand against her..."

His expression hardened.

"...you forfeited every ounce of mercy."

One of the security officers stepped forward.

"Sir."

Richard nodded once.

"Call the police."

Alexander finally panicked.

"You can't prove anything!"

Emma looked toward the kitchen island.

"I can."

The investigator uncovered the hidden phone.

The screen was still recording.

Every word.

Every strike.

Every threat.

Alexander stared in horror.

"No..."

"And that's only today's evidence," Emma said.

"There are three years' worth waiting for detectives."

The color drained from his face.

For the first time...

Alexander Vale looked afraid.
