Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Name

Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Name
The silence that followed felt heavier than the crystal chandelier hanging above them.
Alexander let out a short laugh, forcing confidence into a voice that suddenly sounded uncertain.
"Your daughter?" he scoffed. "Emma told me she grew up with nothing."
The older man didn't blink.
"Emma told you what she chose to tell you."
He stepped forward, his polished shoes stopping beside Emma, who was still kneeling on the marble floor.
His expression, calm only seconds ago, shattered the moment he saw the bruises blooming across her face and the way she instinctively wrapped both arms around her swollen stomach.
"Dad..."
It was the first time Emma had called him that in years.
His eyes filled with pain.
"I should have come sooner."
Alexander frowned.
"Dad?" he repeated. "Who exactly are you?"
One of the men beside the older gentleman placed a leather folder on the dining table.
"My name is Richard Carter," the older man replied quietly. "Chairman and CEO of Carter Global Holdings."
Alexander's confident smile disappeared.
Everyone in New York's business world knew the name.
Carter Global wasn't simply wealthy—it owned hospitals, banks, technology firms, real estate developments across three continents, and controlling shares in companies Alexander had spent years trying to impress.
"No..."
Alexander shook his head.
"That's impossible."
Richard slid several photographs across the table.
Emma as a child.
Emma graduating from college.
Emma standing beside him during charity events years before she met Alexander.
"My daughter asked me to keep our relationship private."
Richard's voice never rose.
"She wanted someone to love her for herself instead of her last name."
Emma slowly stood despite the pain shooting through her ribs.
"When we met," she said, looking directly at Alexander, "you complained that rich women only cared about status."
"So I never told you mine."
Alexander stared at her.
"You lied."
"I protected myself."
His breathing became uneven.
"You let me believe you were broke."
"I let you believe exactly what you wanted."
Richard nodded toward one of the suited men.
"Call the police."
Alexander suddenly laughed.
"You think this is over because of money?"
"No," Richard answered.
"It's over because of evidence."
The second investigator connected a tablet to the television.
Security footage filled the screen.
Alexander striking Emma.
Threatening her.
Shoving her while she was visibly pregnant.
The timestamps stretched across months.
Color drained from Alexander's face.
"You recorded me?"
Emma met his eyes.
"You always believed fear would keep me silent."
She gently rested her hand over her stomach.
"Our son deserved a mother who finally spoke."
Moments later, the elevator doors opened again.

This time, uniformed police officers walked inside.
Alexander's smile finally vanished.
