Chapter 7 - THE FOOTAGE THEY COULD NOT ERASE

The original video came from the refrigerator camera.

Sylvia had installed it months earlier to watch the household staff.

She forgot it recorded audio.

The video began at 6:41 p.m.

I stood beside the counter with one hand against my back.

My voice was tired.

“May I sit down for one minute?”

Sylvia’s answer filled the courtroom.

“Servants don’t sit with the family.”

The judge’s face changed.

The footage continued.

I reached for the breakfast chair.

Sylvia placed both hands against my shoulders.

Then she pushed.

My body struck the granite.

The sound was sickening.

David rushed into the kitchen.

He looked down at me.

“Get up.”

“Clean this before the guests see.”

Elaine paused the video.

Nobody spoke.

Then she played the next section.

My hand reached for the phone.

David took it.

I begged him to call 911.

He threw the phone against the wall.

“There will be no ambulance.”

The recording captured every word.

It captured Sylvia telling me I was dramatic.

It captured David boasting about the sheriff.

It captured him calling me an orphan.

By the time the footage ended, David no longer looked confident.

Judge Caldwell removed his glasses.

“Mr. Whitmore, I am denying your guardianship petition.”

David’s attorney stood.

“Your Honor—”

“I am not finished.”

The judge’s voice sharpened.

“I am issuing an immediate temporary protective order.”

“Mr. Whitmore will have no access to Mrs. Whitmore or the infant child.”

“He will surrender all firearms.”

“He will not contact witnesses.”

“And this record will be forwarded to the district attorney.”

David stood.

“This is outrageous.”

Judge Caldwell looked at him.

“You are an officer of the court.”

“That makes your conduct more serious, not less.”

The hearing ended.

I should have felt relief.

Instead, I watched David whisper to his attorney.

He did not look defeated.

He looked busy.

Elaine noticed too.

“He has another plan.”

My father nodded.

“Men who build their lives on control do not surrender when control is removed.”

That afternoon, hospital security discovered a man using a false maintenance badge near the NICU.

He fled before they could stop him.

A nurse found a small audio recorder taped beneath Grace’s incubator.

Someone had been listening to our conversations.

Agent Mendoza arrived within minutes.

She placed the device in an evidence bag.

“David is violating the protective order.”

“Can you prove he sent the man?” I asked.

“Not yet.”

My father looked through the NICU glass.

“Move Grace.”

The hospital administrator shook her head.

“She is too fragile.”

“Then secure the entire floor.”

Agent Mendoza’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What is it?” Elaine asked.

May you like

The agent looked at us.

“David Whitmore has disappeared.”
