Chapter 14 - THE BLACKOUT

Emergency power activated after six seconds.
It felt like six years.
Nurses manually checked every infant.
Grace’s monitor returned.
Her heartbeat remained steady.
Hospital security locked down the building.
The blackout affected only the NICU floor.
Someone had accessed the electrical control room with an authorized badge.
The badge belonged to a federal technician assigned to the Jefferson Circle investigation.
He was found unconscious in a stairwell.
His credentials had been copied.
Agent Mendoza ordered every investigator re-screened.
My father wanted Grace moved.
Doctors warned that transport could still be dangerous.
I refused to abandon the NICU.
“If someone comes for her, I want to be here.”
Elaine arranged private security.
Caroline assigned two state officers outside the unit.
My father’s protection team covered every elevator.
At 2:15 a.m., a nurse entered carrying medication.
I recognized her face.
She had cared for Grace the previous night.
Still, something felt wrong.
“Where is Nurse Kelly?”
“She was reassigned.”
The woman reached toward Grace’s IV.
I looked at the medication label.
The dosage was ten times higher than the number I had seen before.
“Stop.”
She froze.
“What?”
“That dose is wrong.”
“It was updated by the physician.”
“Which physician?”
She did not answer.
I pressed the emergency call button.
The woman dropped the syringe and ran.
A security officer caught her near the stairwell.
She was not a nurse.
She had stolen an identification badge from a locker.
The syringe contained potassium chloride.
A dose large enough to stop Grace’s heart.
Under questioning, the woman gave only one name.
Marcus Dean.
He had contacted her twelve hours earlier.
He offered fifty thousand dollars.
He told her the child’s death would end the Hale Project.
I stood inside the hospital chapel while Agent Mendoza explained.
My father sat in the last row.
He covered his face with both hands.
“This is my fault.”
“No.”
“They chose you because of me.”
“They chose me because they believed family love could be turned into control.”
I sat beside him.
“That belief belongs to them.”
He looked at me.
“I should resign.”
“Because criminals targeted your family?”
“Because the Court must remain larger than any one person.”
I understood.
But I also understood what David had done.
He had convinced me that silence protected my father.
Now shame was trying to convince my father that disappearance would protect me.
“Do what the law requires.”
I took his hand.
“But do not let them make the decision for you.”
The chapel door opened.
Caroline entered.
“We located Marcus.”
“Where?”
“At Sylvia’s house.”
“That place is still sealed.”
“He entered through an underground storm passage.”
“Why go back?”
Caroline placed a photograph before us.
It showed a metal box beneath the dining room floor.
“We believe Sylvia hid the original Jefferson Circle membership ledger there.”
My father stood.
“Have you recovered it?”
May you like
“No.”
“Marcus burned the house thirty minutes ago.”
