Chapter 1: The Drive Home

Chapter 1: The Drive Home
The drive home was silent.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because every word felt too small.
Delina sat in the passenger seat, clutching the manila folder against her chest while her son slept peacefully in the back seat, still wrapped in the faded tie-dye blanket.
Her mother never once asked about the documents.
Never asked why her daughter had spent the night on asphalt.
Never asked how everything had fallen apart.
Instead, she simply reached across the center console and squeezed Delina's trembling hand.
"You don't have to explain today."
Those seven words shattered the wall Delina had spent months building around herself.
By the time they reached the small family home where Delina had grown up, she could barely breathe through the tears she had been holding back.
Her mother carried the sleeping boy inside as if he weighed nothing at all.
She tucked him into the guest bedroom, kissed his forehead, and quietly closed the door.
Only then did she return to the kitchen.
The folder still sat untouched on the table.
Her mother poured two cups of coffee before finally speaking.
"When you're ready..."
Delina slowly pushed the folder across the table.
"It isn't just divorce paperwork."
Her mother opened it.
The first page made her blood run cold.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Hidden bank accounts.
Mortgage documents carrying Delina's forged signature.
Medical bills deliberately left unpaid.
Pages and pages of evidence proving that Delina's husband hadn't simply abandoned her.
He had planned her financial destruction.
Her mother's hands stopped shaking.
Not because she was less angry.
Because her anger had become focused.
"He's not getting away with this."

For the first time in months...
Delina believed someone.
