Chapter 2: The Hidden Bank Account

A week later, Emma met with her attorney.
She expected discussions about custody, property, and divorce paperwork.
Instead, the attorney frowned while reviewing their financial records.
"Emma... did you authorize these transfers?"
She looked down.
Over the past eighteen months, nearly $180,000 had quietly disappeared from their joint savings account.
Every transfer had been approved using Mark's online banking access.
Emma had never noticed because the withdrawals were spread across dozens of small transactions.
When she confronted Mark over the phone, he sounded desperate.
"I wasn't stealing from you."
"Then where did the money go?"
There was a long silence.
Finally, he answered.
"It wasn't for Rachel."
Emma felt her stomach tighten.
"It was for Dad."
"My father?"
"He begged me not to tell you."
Emma's father had always claimed his retirement savings were secure.
According to Mark, that wasn't true.
Years earlier, he had secretly accumulated enormous gambling debts.
Mark had been paying them off to keep dangerous creditors away from the family.

Emma didn't know what to believe anymore.
For the first time, she realized that almost everyone she loved had been hiding something from her.
