Chapter 1: The Call That Changed Everything

Emma drove home in complete silence.
Her three-year-old son, Liam, slept peacefully in his car seat, unaware that his mother's world had just fallen apart.
She didn't call her husband.
She didn't call her sister.
Instead, she tucked Liam into bed, sat alone in the dark kitchen, and stared at her wedding ring.
At 10:17 p.m., her phone buzzed.
It was her sister, Rachel.
Please answer. You have to let me explain.
Emma ignored it.
Another message arrived.
You don't know the whole truth.
A third message followed.
Mark has been lying to both of us.
Emma finally replied with only four words.
Don't contact me again.
Minutes later, someone knocked on her front door.
It wasn't Rachel.
It was Mark.
His eyes were red, and he looked as if he hadn't stopped shaking since Emma had walked out.
"Please," he whispered. "You saw something terrible... but it wasn't the whole story."
Emma opened the door only wide enough to hand him his spare house key.
"You don't live here anymore."
She closed the door before he could say another word.
The next morning, Emma called a divorce attorney.
