Chapter 2: A Web of Lies

Chapter 2: A Web of Lies
Victoria stepped backward.
"You don't understand."
"I understand perfectly."
Daniel's voice was calm.
Far too calm.
"The necklace."
"The false police report."
"The man you invited into our house."
She glanced nervously toward the street.
"Let's go inside."
"No."
Daniel raised his voice loud enough for every neighbor standing outside to hear.
"You wanted witnesses when Sofia was arrested."
"You can have witnesses now."
Victoria swallowed hard.
"You embarrassed me."
"So you framed an innocent woman?"
"It wasn't supposed to go this far!"
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"It already has."
He immediately called his attorney.
Then he called the police station.
"This is Daniel Harrington."
"I have video evidence proving that the theft reported tonight was staged."
Within thirty minutes, detectives returned to the mansion.
This time...
They weren't looking at Sofia.
They were questioning Victoria.
As investigators reviewed every security angle, another disturbing discovery surfaced.
The man in black gloves wasn't simply Victoria's boyfriend.
His name was Marcus Kane.
A convicted financial criminal who had disappeared years earlier.
Together, Marcus and Victoria had been quietly transferring money from Daniel's charitable foundation into shell companies overseas.
The necklace had never been the goal.
Framing Sofia was simply a distraction.
If everyone focused on the missing jewelry...
No one would notice millions of dollars disappearing.
Detective Lawson looked at Daniel.
"This has been happening for over two years."
Daniel closed his eyes.
His wife hadn't only betrayed their marriage.
She had betrayed every family whose lives depended on that foundation.
Victoria finally broke.
Tears streamed down her face.
"I never meant for it to become this big."
May you like
Daniel answered without emotion.
"You crossed that line a long time ago."
