Chapter 13 - The Passport That Wasn't Missing.

Ethan did not sleep after leaving Marina at the hotel lounge.

He returned to the villa with Sofia, handed the USB drive directly to Lucas, and watched him seal it before making a forensic copy.

No one opened the original.

No one plugged it into a household computer.

By midnight, Lucas had the first directory indexed.

"There are travel documents," he said.

Ethan stood behind him in the hidden office.

"For whom?"

"Beatriz and Isabella."

The words tightened every muscle in Ethan's body.

Lucas opened a PDF copy of a private aviation request.

A charter had been tentatively reserved from Malaga to Geneva for the morning after Ethan's scheduled return from Dubai.

Two passengers were listed.

Beatriz Cole.

Isabella Cole.

"Was it paid?" Ethan asked.

"Deposit only."

"By whom?"

"Marina's company card."

Sofia leaned over the screen.

"And the return flight?"

Lucas shook his head.

"None booked."

Ethan stared at the itinerary.

The planned departure time was 6:40 a.m.

If Ethan had returned on his original evening flight, he would have arrived home after midnight.

He would have been tired, disoriented, and probably drawn immediately into whatever confrontation Beatriz had prepared.

By sunrise, Isabella could have been on a plane.

"What was the reason for travel?"

Lucas opened another file.

"Educational assessment."

A letter from the Swiss school stated that Isabella had been invited to a three-day family orientation.

The letter referenced consent from both parents.

Ethan's name appeared at the bottom.

His signature did not.

Instead, a digital acknowledgment code was listed.

Sofia frowned.

"That code needs to be traced."

Lucas was already typing.

"It was issued through an online consent portal."

"Email verification?"

"Yes."

"Which email?"

Lucas paused.

Then he turned the screen toward Ethan.

The verification had been sent to the same look-alike email account used for the forged messages.

"So whoever controlled the fake account confirmed the trip as me," Ethan said.

"That's what it appears."

Sofia's phone was already in her hand.

"I'm notifying the school that any consent attributed to Ethan is disputed and that no travel authorization exists."

Ethan nodded.

Then he remembered the safe.

"Isabella's passport."

Sofia looked at him.

"We found one passport in the safe."

"One?"

Ethan's voice sharpened.

Isabella held dual American and British citizenship through Claire.

She had two valid passports.

"The American one was there."

"The British one should be too."

They searched the safe inventory.

No second passport.

Ethan called Helen.

"Did Claire ever give Isabella's British passport to you?"

"No."

"Did you renew it recently?"

"You did last year."

Ethan remembered.

He had taken Isabella to Gibraltar for the appointment while they made a weekend trip of it.

The passport had arrived by courier at the Marbella villa.

"It's missing."

Helen's voice tightened.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know yet."

But he did know what it could mean.

A child with a valid passport and a forged parental consent trail could be moved quickly before anyone understood there was a dispute.

Ethan called the relevant authorities through Sofia and reported the passport missing and potentially connected to disputed travel plans.

Sofia handled the language carefully.

No accusations beyond the evidence.

No public drama.

No threats.

Just preservation, notification, and restrictions where legally available.

At 1:35 a.m., Lucas found a photograph on the USB drive.

It showed Isabella's British passport lying on a white desk beside an envelope.

The image metadata placed it inside the Marbella villa six weeks earlier.

"Zoom in on the envelope," Ethan said.

The handwriting read MARINA.

Sofia looked at him.

"That doesn't prove Marina still has it."

"But it proves Beatriz had it outside the safe."

Lucas opened a folder of messages exported from an encrypted chat.

Most were between Beatriz and Marina.

The language was coded but not subtle.

B: School wants second ID copy.

M: Send tonight.

B: Keep original until after D returns.

M: Why original?

B: Less risk of him blocking if we need to move quickly.

Ethan read the last line again.

He felt no explosion of anger now.

Only a deep, cold certainty.

"She planned it."

Sofia nodded.

"It certainly reads that way."

More messages followed.

M: What if he says no to Switzerland?

B: Then he gets angry.

M: And?

B: Then we record everything.

M: What about Bella?

B: Once she's there, he will negotiate.

Ethan stepped away from the screen.

He had to walk into the hallway because the room felt too small.

Sofia followed.

"Ethan."

"She wrote it."

"Yes."

"She wrote that once Isabella was there, I would negotiate."

"Yes."

"Like she was a contract term."

Sofia did not answer.

There was nothing useful to say.

Ethan went upstairs.

He opened the guest suite door quietly.

Isabella was asleep with one arm around the stuffed rabbit.

The lamp beside the bed was still on.

He sat in the chair near the window and stayed there until dawn.

At seven, Isabella woke and blinked at him.

"Did you sleep there?"

"A little."

"Why?"

Ethan smiled faintly.

"Because I'm bad at going to bed on time."

She sat up.

"That's a bad habit."

"Very serious."

"Do you lose points?"

The question was playful, but Ethan heard the old system inside it.

"No points."

"Maybe you should."

"You're getting dangerous."

She grinned.

Then she noticed his expression.

"Something happened."

Ethan considered lying to protect her from adult information.

He chose a simple truth instead.

"I learned that Beatriz made plans about school without asking me."

Isabella's smile disappeared.

"The mountain school?"

"Yes."

"Am I going?"

"No."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

She studied his face.

"Even if she says you signed it?"

"Even then."

Isabella leaned back against the pillows.

"I knew you didn't."

Ethan looked at her.

"When did you know?"

"When you came home."

"Why?"

She thought for a second.

"Because you looked surprised."

It was such a child's answer and such a devastating one that Ethan almost laughed and cried at the same time.

"That's good detective work."

"Rosa says I notice everything."

"Rosa is right."

After breakfast, Maya came to the villa for another session.

Ethan waited in the garden with Helen and Martin.

Half an hour later, Sofia arrived with urgent news.

"Marina turned over Isabella's British passport through her attorney."

Ethan stood.

"Where was it?"

"In a locked drawer at her Barcelona apartment."

"So she had it."

"Yes."

"Is she cooperating?"

"Partly."

"Why partly?"

"Because she wants protection from charges connected to the invoices and attempted transfers."

Ethan looked toward the villa.

"Can her cooperation establish what Beatriz planned?"

"Possibly."

Sofia handed him a printed statement.

Marina claimed Beatriz told her the three-million-euro trust transfer was temporary and would be divided after the separation agreement.

She also claimed Beatriz wanted Isabella in Switzerland before Ethan could consult family counsel.

"Does Rafael appear in this?"

"Only as the attorney preparing separation paperwork."

"Did he know about the forged consent?"

"Marina says no."

Ethan read on.

Then he reached a paragraph that made him stop.

"What is this?"

Marina stated that Beatriz had another person inside Cole Meridian providing information about Ethan's schedule and document procedures.

Sofia's face was grim.

"We don't have a name."

"She had help inside my company."

"Apparently."

Ethan immediately called Javier.

"I need access logs for every employee who viewed my Dubai schedule, signature procedures, and family office files."

Javier went silent.

"How far back?"

"Six months."

"That's going to be a long list."

"Narrow it to anyone with unusual access after I left Spain."

"I'll start now."

By afternoon, Javier had three names.

Two were easily explained.

The third was not.

Nolan Price, Ethan's former executive assistant, had left Cole Meridian eight months earlier after a dispute over expenses.

His company access had been terminated.

Yet someone had used an old credential token tied to his account on June 14.

"That should have been impossible," Javier said.

"Unless the token wasn't disabled."

"It was."

"Then how did it authenticate?"

"Through a legacy family-office server that should have been decommissioned."

Ethan felt dread gather again.

"Who maintained that server?"

Javier checked.

"A contractor."

"Name?"

"Nolan Price Consulting."

Ethan closed his eyes.

Nolan had not simply left the company.

He had retained a forgotten door.

"Find him."

Javier was quiet.

"Already trying."

Sofia looked at Ethan.

"If Nolan helped Beatriz access your communications, this expands beyond a domestic dispute."

"Good."

She frowned.

"Good?"

"It means there are records outside her control."

Before Sofia could answer, the front gate intercom sounded.

The security guard's voice came through.

"Mr. Cole, a courier is here with a package addressed to Isabella."

Ethan's stomach tightened.

"Sender?"

"No name."

"Do not bring it inside."

The package was examined by security and found to contain nothing dangerous.

Inside was a pink envelope and a small stuffed horse.

The note was written in Beatriz's handwriting.

My sweet Bella, adults are telling stories because they are angry.

You know who took care of you when Dad was gone.

You know who was there every day.

Tell the truth and we can be together again.

Ethan read the message once.

Then he handed it to Sofia.

"Can she contact Isabella directly?"

"Not if we obtain the emergency no-contact order we're filing today."

Ethan looked toward the house.

"File it now."

Sofia nodded.

Then she turned the note over.

There was one more sentence on the back.

Don't let Dad make you forget what really happened.

Ethan felt the old instinct to tear the paper in half.

Instead, he placed it in an evidence sleeve.

May you like

For once, Beatriz's words would not disappear.

They would speak for themselves.
