Chapter 10 - The Dinner She Couldn't Control.

Ethan did not go to the gate alone.
Sofia insisted on standing beside him, and Lucas remained inside with the preserved devices.
The two police officers waited several steps behind Beatriz and Rafael Ibarra.
Beatriz wore a tailored beige suit now, her dark hair pinned neatly at the nape of her neck.
She looked nothing like the woman in the silk robe who had watched Isabella drag garbage across the driveway.
That was the point.
"Ethan," she said softly.
"I came to collect my belongings."
He looked at the officers.
"Is there a problem?"
One officer, a middle-aged man named Inspector Vega, answered in English.
"Mrs. Cole says she has been prevented from accessing her residence."
Sofia stepped forward.
"She has not been prevented from supervised access."
Rafael held up a hand.
"We are not here to argue in the street."
"Good," Sofia said.
"Then your client can collect personal items under observation and leave."
Beatriz looked past Ethan toward the house.
"Where is Isabella?"
"Safe."
"I asked where she is."
"You don't need that information right now."
Her expression hardened.
"I am her stepmother."
"You are not her legal guardian."
The sentence came from Sofia.
Beatriz turned sharply.
"I have authorization."
Sofia's eyes narrowed.
"Which authorization?"
For the first time, Rafael looked at his client.
Beatriz hesitated.
The moment was brief but revealing.
"The temporary family authorization Ethan signed before Dubai."
Sofia shook her head.
"That permits school pickups and routine medical consent."
"It says family decisions."
"Not custody."
Rafael stepped in.
"We can resolve scope later."
Inspector Vega looked from one lawyer to the other.
"I am not deciding family-law questions at a gate."
He looked at Ethan.
"Can Mrs. Cole enter for belongings?"
"Yes, supervised."
Beatriz smiled thinly.
"How generous."
They entered.
Ethan asked Elena to keep Isabella upstairs with the door closed.
He did not want her hearing adults transform her fear into competing legal language.
Beatriz walked through the foyer as if reclaiming a stage.
"My bedroom first."
Sofia nodded to a female security officer.
"Accompany her."
Beatriz stopped.
"She is not coming into my bedroom."
"Then you can wait for a court process," Sofia replied.
Rafael murmured something to Beatriz.
She relented.
They went upstairs.
Inspector Vega remained in the library with Ethan.
"Mr. Cole, I need to ask a direct question."
"Go ahead."
"Did you threaten your wife?"
"I told her if she frightened Isabella again, she would leave the house."
"Did you threaten physical harm?"
"No."
"Touch her?"
"No."
"Block her from leaving?"
"No."
Vega nodded and wrote in a small notebook.
"She alleges that you returned unexpectedly in an agitated state and began accusing her based on statements from a distressed child."
Ethan looked at him.
"Would you like to see why?"
"If you have relevant evidence."
Sofia gave Ethan a warning glance.
They could show preserved facts without turning the police officer into an informal investigator for everything.
Ethan brought up photographs of the chore board.
He showed the line that removed calls with Dad as a consequence.
He showed the locked storage room containing Isabella's belongings.
He showed the forged email domain and explained that the original corporate account had not sent the message.
Vega's expression changed gradually.
"And the marks on the child?"
"A doctor documented them yesterday."
"Report?"
"Available through counsel."
Vega closed his notebook.
"This is more complicated than the complaint we received."
"Yes."
"Has child protection been contacted?"
Sofia answered.
"A family-law specialist advised us this morning, and the pediatrician is preparing the required report."
Vega nodded.
"Good."
Footsteps sounded upstairs.
Beatriz came down carrying two suitcases.
Her composure was intact until she saw Vega speaking calmly with Ethan.
"Are we done?" she asked.
Rafael checked his phone.
"For now."
Then Beatriz looked toward the upper floor.
"I want to say goodnight to Isabella."
Ethan's answer was immediate.
"No."
Her face transformed.
"You cannot keep her from me."
"She asked not to see you."
It was true.
Elena had asked Isabella whether she wanted contact, and Isabella had shaken her head before Elena finished the question.
Beatriz turned to Vega.
"You see?"
Vega remained neutral.
"I am not ordering contact between a child and a stepparent tonight."
Beatriz's eyes flashed.
"I raised her for three years."
Ethan stared at her.
"Then why was she afraid to eat yogurt in front of you?"
Rafael quietly said, "Beatriz."
But she had begun to lose control.
"Because she performs for him."
Ethan did not respond.
"She knows exactly how to make you feel guilty," Beatriz continued.
"She has always known."
Rafael stepped closer.
"We should leave."
"No."
Beatriz pointed toward Ethan.
"He disappears for months, and then he walks in and plays perfect father for forty-eight hours."
Ethan felt the accusation hit because part of it was true.
He had been gone.
He had missed things.
He had failed to question enough.
But guilt no longer made him easier to control.
"I was absent," he said.
"I won't defend that."
Beatriz seemed surprised.
"But absence is not consent."
Her mouth tightened.
"You gave me authority."
"Not to frighten her."
"I gave her structure."
"You gave her a list that threatened contact with me."
"Because you undermine every rule I make."
"You forged my approval."
The room went silent.
Rafael turned fully toward Beatriz.
"What is he talking about?"
She stared at Ethan.
"He's bluffing."
Sofia stepped in.
"This discussion is over."
Beatriz laughed sharply.
"Of course it is."
She picked up her suitcase handle.
"Because he gets to control the ending."
Then she looked up the stairs.
Her voice softened dramatically.
"Isabella, sweetheart, I love you."
A door closed upstairs.
The sound echoed through the foyer.
Beatriz's face went white.
Ethan did not know whether Isabella had closed it or Elena had.
Either way, Beatriz heard the answer she had not expected.
She left without another word.
That evening, Helen and Martin Bennett arrived from Boston.
Isabella saw them from the top of the stairs and froze.
Helen opened her arms but did not move forward.
"Hi, sweetheart."
Isabella looked at Ethan.
"Can I?"
The question nearly broke all three adults.
"You never have to ask permission to hug Grandma," Ethan said.
Isabella ran.
Helen dropped to her knees and caught her.
Martin turned away, pressing a fist against his mouth.
For several minutes nobody tried to speak.
Later, they ate dinner together at the long kitchen table rather than the formal dining room.
Ethan ordered simple food from Isabella's favorite Italian restaurant.
She chose pasta with butter and parmesan.
Halfway through dinner, she knocked over her water glass.
The water spread across the table.
Isabella went rigid.
Her fork slipped from her hand.
"I'm sorry."
Helen reached for a towel.
"It's just water."
"I'm sorry."
"Bella," Ethan said.
She backed away from the table.
"I didn't mean to."
Ethan stood slowly.
"Nobody thinks you did."
"I'll clean everything."
"You can help wipe it if you want."
He kept his voice gentle.
"But you're not in trouble."
Isabella stared at him.
"Really?"
"Really."
Martin slid a napkin across the table.
"I spilled coffee on an entire passport once."
Isabella blinked.
"You did?"
"Ruined every page."
Helen smiled through tears.
"He also blamed the table."
A tiny laugh escaped Isabella.
The tension broke.
They cleaned the water together.
After dinner, Isabella brought out the new list she had made with Ethan.
She showed Helen the items proudly.
Call Grandma had a large green check mark beside it.
Swim was next.
Strawberry ice cream after that.
Helen kissed the top of her head.
"This is a much better list."
Isabella looked at Ethan.
"Can Rosa be tomorrow?"
"If you're ready."
"I am."
Then she added something at the bottom in purple marker.
Tell the truth.
Ethan read it.
"What's this?"
Isabella looked serious.
"For everybody."
The room fell quiet again.
Martin reached across the table and squeezed Ethan's shoulder.
At 10:20 p.m., Sofia called.
"The bank traced the attempted three-million-euro transfer."
"To Marina Valdes?"
"Yes."
"Who is she?"
"Beatriz's older sister."
Ethan closed his eyes.
Sofia continued.
"And that's not the worst part."
"What is?"
"Marina incorporated a private education consultancy six weeks ago."
"Let me guess."
"Same week the boarding-school application was started."
Ethan looked through the glass doors toward Isabella laughing softly with her grandparents.
"So the education trust was going to pay Beatriz's sister."
"Potentially millions."
"Can we prove Beatriz knew?"
"Not yet."
Sofia paused.
"But we found an invoice."
"For what?"
"Guardian transition services."
"Whose guardian?"
May you like
Sofia's voice was grim.
"Isabella's."
