Chapter 3: The Hidden Bruises

Chapter 3: The Hidden Bruises
I drove Emily to the children's hospital myself.
She protested every mile of the journey, insisting I return home to the twins.
I refused.
By the time we arrived, the emergency entrance was crowded with nurses rushing between patients.
The moment Emily stepped from the car, one of them froze.
"Emily?"
A middle-aged nurse hurried toward her.
"What happened to you?"
Emily instinctively pulled the blanket tighter around her bruises.
"I fell."
The nurse looked directly at me.
Then back at Emily.
Neither of us spoke.
She didn't believe it.
Within minutes, a doctor was examining Emily while another nurse quietly called hospital security.
I waited outside the room.
Across the hall, I noticed a little boy sleeping beneath a blanket covered in cartoon rockets.
His skin was pale.
A breathing tube rested beneath his nose.
A small sign hanging from the bed read:
Ethan Brooks.
Emily's son.
She saw him through the glass and immediately began crying.
"I made it..."
she whispered.
"I made it before he woke up."
The doctor finally stepped into the hallway.
"Are you Mr. Cole?"
"I am."
"Whoever assaulted her caused multiple fractures in her wrists."
He hesitated.
"And several bruises in different stages of healing."
Different stages.
Not just today.
Weeks.
Maybe months.
"Doctor..."
I asked quietly.
"How many?"
He met my eyes.
"I'd estimate at least six separate incidents."
The hallway seemed to tilt beneath my feet.
Six.
Emily hadn't been abused once.
She'd survived it repeatedly.
Hospital security approached me.
One officer spoke carefully.
"Mr. Cole..."
"Miss Brooks refuses to identify her attacker."
I looked through the glass.
Emily sat beside Ethan's bed, gently brushing his hair back despite her bandaged hands.
She still wouldn't betray Victoria.
Not because she forgave her.
Because she believed protecting her job meant protecting her son.
I finally understood.
Victoria hadn't controlled Emily with violence alone.
She controlled her with fear.
Fear of losing the income paying for Ethan's chemotherapy.
Fear of losing his insurance.
Fear of losing hope.
That realization hurt more than anything else.
I quietly stepped into the room.
Emily looked up.
"I won't let her hurt you again."
"You don't know what she's capable of."
"No."
I nodded slowly.
"But I'm about to find out."
I turned and walked out of the hospital.
For the first time in my marriage...

I wasn't going home as Victoria's husband.
I was going home as the man determined to expose the truth.
