Chapter 2: The Smile That Changed Everything

Chapter 2: The Smile That Changed Everything

"And yet..."

I couldn't force myself to finish the sentence.

Because saying it aloud would make it real.

Victoria?

My wife?

The woman who had smiled for every family photograph, hosted charity galas, and kissed our children goodnight every evening?

No.

It couldn't be.

But the evidence surrounded me.

The bruises.

The ropes.

The wine.

Emily lowered her eyes.

"I never wanted to come between your family."

"You didn't."

"I should have stayed quiet."

"You absolutely should not have."

She looked at me with genuine confusion, as though kindness had become something unfamiliar.

"I thought if I just did what she wanted... she'd let me see Ethan."

"What did she want?"

Emily took a long, shaky breath.

"She wanted me to admit that I was trying to steal you."

For a moment, I couldn't even understand the words.

"What?"

"She said you smiled at me too often."

I stared at her.

"That's insane."

"I know."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You've worked for us for almost three years."

"You've practically helped raise my children."

"You're family."

Emily looked away.

"She didn't see it that way."

The silence between us grew heavier.

Finally, Emily continued.

"She accused me of flirting with you."

"I told her I'd never do something like that."

"She slapped me."

My fists clenched.

"Then she poured wine into another glass."

"She sat there drinking while I begged to leave."

The words came slower now.

"She said..."

Emily swallowed.

"'If your son means so much to you, prove how loyal you are to mine first.'"

I felt sick.

"What happened after that?"

"I tried to walk past her."

Emily touched the bruise on her cheek.

"She hit me with the bottle."

My vision blurred with rage.

"I fell."

"When I tried to stand..."

"She dragged me upstairs."

"You fought her?"

"I tried."

She gave a humorless smile.

"But she's stronger than she looks."

"She already had the sheets torn into strips."

My stomach dropped.

"She planned this."

Emily nodded.

"I think so."

"She tied my hands."

"Then she brought Oliver and Olivia into the nursery."

My heart stopped.

"She threatened them?"

Emily's eyes immediately filled with tears.

"She picked Oliver up."

"I thought she was going to drop him."

My entire body went cold.

"So I stopped fighting."

"She smiled again."

"She said..."

Emily's voice cracked.

"'Good. Mothers always make the easiest prisoners.'"

The room became impossibly still.

I looked toward my sleeping children.

If Emily had resisted...

If Victoria had slipped...

I couldn't finish the thought.

Emily continued.

"She strapped both babies onto me."

"So I couldn't move."

"If either of them woke up..."

"I'd have no choice except to comfort them."

"She knew I would never risk frightening them."

Hours.

Emily had remained tied there for hours.

Bleeding.

Unable to feel her hands.

Rocking two children so they would never know they were trapped inside a nightmare.

I reached for my phone again.

This time, I wasn't asking permission.

"I'm calling the police."

Emily grabbed my wrist with surprising strength.

"No."

I looked down.

For the first time since freeing her, she had managed to move her fingers.

Barely.

But enough.

"They won't believe me."

"They'll believe what they see."

"They'll ask why I stayed."

"They'll ask why I never reported her before."

The word before echoed in my head.

"Before?"

Emily realized what she'd said.

Her face turned pale.

I stared at her.

"This wasn't the first time..."

She closed her eyes.

"No."

May you like

My blood ran cold.

"It wasn't."
