Chapter 1: The Ambulance

The paramedics pushed through the crowd as Daniel refused to leave Elena's side.

"Pulse is weak, but she's alive," one medic announced. "We need to move now."

Marcus stepped forward. "There must be some mistake."

Daniel grabbed his brother by the collar.

"The only mistake was thinking I'd never come home."

Security cameras recorded every second as Elena was rushed out of the estate. Daniel noticed his mother quietly slipping her phone into her purse.

"Don't let her leave," he ordered the head of security.

Minutes later, detectives arrived after the paramedics reported suspicious injuries. They photographed the bruises around Elena's neck and wrists before sealing off the living room as a potential crime scene.

At the hospital, doctors confirmed what Daniel had feared.

Elena had been heavily sedated with a powerful prescription medication. She had suffered dehydration but the baby was still alive.

The obstetrician looked Daniel in the eye.

"If she'd remained in that coffin much longer, we might have lost them both."

Daniel sat outside the intensive care unit until dawn.

Then his phone vibrated.

It was a secure message from the forensic accounting firm he had quietly hired six months earlier.
