Chapter 1: The Truth Behind Her Bruises

Chapter 1: The Truth Behind Her Bruises

Ethan rushed to Olivia's side, his trembling hands hovering over the bruises that covered her arms and face.

"Who did this to you?" he whispered, his voice cracking.

Olivia smiled weakly, her eyes never leaving the tiny baby sleeping peacefully beside her.

"Our son..." she murmured. "He's healthy."

Ethan collapsed to his knees, tears streaming uncontrollably down his face.

"I wasn't here."

"You were trying to give us a better life," Olivia replied softly.

The two older women standing near the doorway exchanged guilty glances.

Finally, Ethan's mother stepped forward.

"There is something you need to know."

The room fell silent.

"When Olivia went into labor, there were complications. She lost a dangerous amount of blood. The doctors wanted to perform an emergency C-section immediately."

Ethan looked confused.

"Then why..."

His mother lowered her head.

"Someone delayed the surgery."

The words hit him like a punch.

"Who?"

Neither woman answered.

Then Olivia quietly spoke.

"Your father."

Ethan's heart stopped.

"He wanted proof that the baby was biologically yours before approving the surgery. He refused to sign the consent forms until the DNA samples were collected."

"What?"

"He said he wouldn't waste the family fortune on another man's child."

Ethan stared in disbelief.

"And while everyone argued... I kept bleeding."

The bruises weren't from abuse.

They came from countless IV needles, failed attempts to stabilize her, emergency compressions, and the desperate efforts to save both mother and child.

Ethan buried his face in her hand, overwhelmed by guilt.

"I'm so sorry."

Olivia gently wiped away his tears.

"But our son survived."

"That's all I prayed for."
