The investigation uncovered far more than anyone expected.
Security cameras from neighboring homes showed Leo being led toward the kennel on multiple occasions.
School records revealed unexplained bruises and repeated reports that he often arrived hungry.
Several of Vanessa's text messages were recovered from her phone.
In one message she complained to a friend:
"Mark only notices that brat when he's home. Thankfully, he's always traveling."
Another read:
"Fear works better than kindness."
The evidence was overwhelming.
Vanessa accepted a plea agreement rather than face trial.
She received a lengthy prison sentence for multiple counts of felony child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and child neglect.
She also lost every claim to our home and finances.
When the sentencing ended, I didn't feel victorious.
