Chapter 6 - The Child in the Glass Room

Seraphina survived the surgery.
She did not wake.
The medical team placed her in an induced coma while they fought swelling, blood loss, and a clot that had formed near her lungs.
Her daughter lay two floors above in the neonatal intensive-care unit.
The infant weighed barely four pounds.
She breathed beneath a clear plastic hood while monitors counted every fragile heartbeat.
Julian named her Arabella before Seraphina regained consciousness.
He filed the birth certificate electronically through a hospital administrator loyal to the Vale family.
He listed himself as the sole legal informant.
Then he petitioned for emergency guardianship.
The petition arrived at the courthouse at 6:03 a.m.
A judge signed the temporary order at 6:41.
By seven, Julian controlled Seraphina's medical decisions.
By eight, he controlled access to the child.
By nine, Vale Security had removed Gabriel from the hospital.
The news cameras recorded him being escorted through the lobby.
Julian's public statement described a grieving brother suffering an emotional breakdown.
Vivienne visited the NICU wearing black.
She stood before the glass and watched Arabella's tiny chest rise and fall.
“She has Ashcroft eyes,” Julian said.
“She has assets,” Vivienne replied.
Julian looked at his mother.
“She is my daughter.”
“She is the key.”
“I will not let you hurt her.”
Vivienne turned slowly.
“Do not confuse possession with love.”
Julian's face tightened.
For the first time, the alliance between mother and son showed a fracture.
Outside the hospital, Gabriel and Mara worked from the back seat of an unmarked car.
The temporary order prohibited Gabriel from contacting Seraphina or entering any facility where the baby received care.
It did not prohibit Mara from investigating attempted murder.
She obtained security footage from a neighboring estate.
One camera faced the upper windows of Blackthorn House.
The staircase itself was hidden, but the recording captured the great window and the fluttering documents.
It also captured Vivienne moving toward Seraphina moments before the fall.
A second figure stood in the shadow of the upper gallery.
The image was blurred.
Gabriel enlarged it frame by frame.
The figure appeared to be a man wearing medical scrubs.
Dr.
Mercer had witnessed the push.
Mara traced a vehicle leaving the servants' entrance six minutes later.
The car belonged to a hospice company controlled by a Vale subsidiary.
Its GPS unit had been disabled.
A toll camera picked it up heading north.
Gabriel remembered an abandoned Vale rehabilitation center near the state line.
They drove there without a warrant.
The building had been closed for seven years.
Electricity still ran to the basement.
Inside, they found an improvised treatment room, restraints, blood-stained gauze, and Dr.
Mercer's black leather case.
They did not find Mercer.
A recorder lay beneath the examination table.
Gabriel pressed play.
Mercer's voice filled the room.
My name is Elias Mercer.
If this recording is found, Vivienne Vale knows I attempted to withdraw from our agreement.
The drugs used during Mrs.
Vale's pregnancies were provided by Vale Biologic Systems.
I was instructed to cause losses that appeared spontaneous.
Gabriel closed his eyes.
Mara let the recording continue.
Julian Vale authorized the payments.
However, he was not informed of the first pregnancy intervention until afterward.
Gabriel looked up.
The distinction mattered.
Vivienne had acted alone during the first miscarriage.
Julian had joined the conspiracy later.
The recording ended with a sound of a door opening.
Mercer said one final sentence.
You promised no one would touch the child.
A woman's voice answered.
Promises are how families train obedient men.
Then came a gunshot.
Mara searched the basement.
Behind a locked refrigeration door, they found Dr.
Mercer's body.
His right hand was wrapped around a torn piece of blue fabric.
The same fabric as Seraphina's gown.
Someone wanted the murder connected to her.
At the hospital, Julian signed authorization to move Arabella to a private Vale clinic.
The transport team arrived after midnight.
When the incubator reached the service elevator, a nurse checked the infant's identity band.
The name was correct.
May you like
The blood type was not.
The baby inside the incubator was not Seraphina's daughter.
