Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Nine months later.

The Montgomery County Courthouse stood tall and imposing against the gray winter sky.

Inside Courtroom 4B, the air was entirely still.

Khloe sat in the front row of the gallery.

She wore a sharp, tailored black suit.

She looked strong.

She looked healed.

Beside her sat Harrison, radiating a quiet, undeniable power.

At the defense table, Vanessa Kensington looked unrecognizable.

Her blonde hair had gone dark at the roots.

Her skin was pale and drawn.

The orange jumpsuit hung loosely on her thin frame.

She refused to look back at the gallery.

She couldn't bear to meet Khloe’s eyes.

The judge struck his gavel.

"Will the defendant please rise."

Vanessa stood up slowly, her legs shaking.

"Vanessa Kensington, a jury has found you guilty of Attempted Murder in the First Degree."

The judge’s voice was devoid of sympathy.

"Your actions on the steps of this very courthouse were cowardly, malicious, and entirely unprovoked."

"You nearly took the life of a mother and her unborn child out of pure greed and spite."

The judge looked down over his glasses.

"I am sentencing you to twenty-five years in state prison, without the possibility of parole."

Vanessa collapsed into her chair, sobbing silently.

No one in the courtroom moved to comfort her.

As the bailiffs clamped handcuffs onto Vanessa’s wrists and led her away, Khloe felt a massive weight lift from her chest.

She didn't feel joy.

She didn't feel triumph.

She just felt a profound, overwhelming sense of peace.

Outside the courtroom, Harrison checked his phone.

"News from New York," he said, turning to Khloe.

"What is it?"

"Richard just took his plea deal."

Harrison pocketed the phone.

"Ten years in federal prison for the wire fraud."

"And he forfeited everything."

Khloe took a deep breath of the crisp winter air.

"Let him rot," she said calmly.

Harrison smiled, a genuine, proud smile.

He offered his sister his arm.

"Let's go home, Khloe. Lily is waiting."
