Chapter 2 - The Husband at the Door.

Preston Whitmore arrived twelve minutes later wearing a charcoal suit, a loosened tie, and the expression of a man who believed every room should rearrange itself around his irritation.

Emily heard his voice before she saw him.

"Where is my wife?"

The question might have sounded concerned if he had not immediately followed it with another.

"And why is security holding Vanessa?"

Emily closed her eyes.

Dr. Cole stood near the monitor with his arms folded.

Nurse Leah Moreno, the charge nurse, had positioned herself between the bed and the door with the quiet efficiency of someone who had already decided whom she trusted.

The door opened.

Preston stepped inside.

His eyes went first to Emily.

Then to the fetal monitor.

Then, strangely, to the hallway behind him.

"What happened?"

Emily waited.

He looked at her purple gown, the IV port taped to her hand, and the tension in her face.

He did not ask whether she was hurt.

"Vanessa says you attacked her."

Nurse Leah's head turned slightly.

Dr. Cole's expression did not move.

Emily almost laughed.

She could not decide whether the absurdity was funny or simply exhausting.

"She stood on my hospital bed and cornered me."

Preston frowned.

"She said she was trying to calm you down."

"In high heels?"

He ignored that.

"Did you throw water at her?"

Emily looked at him for a long time.

"Yes."

Preston exhaled as if she had confirmed a disappointing business forecast.

"Emily."

"Don't say my name like I'm the embarrassment here."

His eyes hardened.

"I'm trying to keep this from becoming something bigger."

"Bigger than your pregnant wife being cornered in a hospital room by your mistress?"

"Lower your voice."

Emily stared at him.

Nurse Leah looked down at the chart to hide her reaction.

Dr. Cole did not bother.

"Mr. Whitmore," he said, "your wife's blood pressure is elevated and the baby had a brief deceleration."

Preston's face finally changed.

"Is he okay?"

"Right now, yes."

Emily noticed the pronoun.

He had asked about the baby.

Not about her.

Dr. Cole continued.

"Stress is not helpful, so I need this room calm."

Preston nodded too quickly.

"Of course."

Then he leaned closer to Emily.

"Tell security this was a misunderstanding."

She blinked.

"What?"

"Tell them Vanessa didn't threaten you."

"She did."

"Emily, listen to me."

"I have been listening to you for three years."

His nostrils flared.

"This is not the place."

"You brought her here."

"She had a consultation."

"On the maternity floor?"

Preston looked away.

That was enough.

Emily felt something cold settle in her chest.

"Why was she here, Preston?"

"I told you."

"No."

Emily watched him carefully.

"You gave me a story."

The door opened again.

Daniel Mercer stepped inside.

He wore a navy jacket, gray slacks, and no tie.

His silver hair was slightly windblown, and he carried no briefcase.

Vanessa, standing in the hallway beside a security officer, looked past him with obvious disappointment.

This was the father she had expected to fear?

Daniel did not look at Daniel stared at the retention request while Raymond called the information-security director directly.

Emily could hear only Raymond's side of the conversation.

"No changes until legal review."

A pause.

"Correct."

Another pause.

"And preserve the request metadata."

He ended the call.

Emily looked at him.

"Can Preston actually shorten how long cameras are kept?"

"Not alone."

"Then why file the request?"

"Because if no one challenged it, it might have moved through committee as an operational cost change."

Daniel's mouth tightened.

"Seven days is unusually short for a hospital this size."

Leah nodded.

"Especially around maternity, pharmacy, and controlled-access units."

Emily pictured the footage of Preston walking Vanessa to her room.

If the retention period had already been shortened, that recording could have disappeared before anyone knew to ask for it.

"When did he submit the request?"

"Two days ago," Daniel said.

"Before Vanessa came here."

No one spoke.

Emily felt the hairs rise along her arms.

"So he expected something worth deleting."

Raymond corrected her gently.

"We cannot say that yet."

"You can think it."

He did not deny that.

Leah's phone buzzed again.

"Security is pulling the corridor video from last week too."

Daniel looked at Emily.

"Fourteen-B."

She nodded.

The anonymous messages had stopped, but their presence now felt less like harassment and more like someone pushing her toward a trail.

"Whoever is texting me knows the building."

Raymond agreed.

"And knows what Preston is afraid we'll find."

Emily looked at the unknown number again.

For the first time, she wondered whether the person on the other end was not trying to frighten her.

Maybe they were trying to keep her from being erased.

Preston.

He went directly to Emily.

"Em."

His voice broke on the edge of the word.

Emily had not realized how tightly she was holding herself together until her father touched her shoulder.

"I'm okay."

Daniel looked at Dr. Cole.

"Is she?"

"We are monitoring both of them."

Daniel nodded once.

"Thank you."

Then he looked at Emily's face.

"Tell me what happened."

Preston stepped forward.

"Daniel, before this gets out of proportion—"

Daniel raised one hand.

He did not even look at him.

Preston stopped speaking.

Emily saw surprise flicker across his face.

Her father had always been polite to Preston.

Almost excessively polite.

That politeness was gone.

Emily told him everything in short sentences.

Vanessa entering without permission.

Vanessa telling her Preston would never return.

Vanessa stepping onto the mattress.

The hand on Emily's shoulder.

The water.

The phone.

The doctor.

The baby's heart rate.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he turned toward Nurse Leah.

"Was any of this witnessed?"

Leah nodded.

"I saw Ms. Cross being escorted out, and Dr. Cole witnessed the situation when he entered."

Daniel looked at the ceiling corner.

"Camera?"

Leah followed his gaze.

"There is one outside the door and one covering the corridor."

Preston suddenly spoke.

"Daniel, hospital security video is confidential."

Daniel turned to him at last.

"I know."

The simplicity of the answer made Preston uneasy.

"Then you know you can't just demand access."

"I didn't demand anything."

Daniel took his phone out of his pocket.

"Yet."

Vanessa laughed from the hallway.

"This is insane."

Daniel looked toward her.

His face revealed nothing.

"You are Vanessa Cross?"

She straightened.

"Yes."

"Did you enter my daughter's hospital room without her permission?"

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Preston invited me."

Daniel glanced at Preston.

"Did you?"

Preston hesitated.

A fraction too long.

"I told her Emily was here."

"That wasn't the question."

Preston's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

Daniel nodded.

"Good."

Vanessa frowned.

"Good?"

"I prefer clarity."

He pressed a contact on his phone.

Preston stepped closer.

"Who are you calling?"

Daniel lifted the phone to his ear.

"Raymond."

The color left Preston's face so quickly that Emily thought she had imagined it.

Vanessa looked between them.

"Who is Raymond?"

Preston did not answer.

Daniel waited for the call to connect.

"Ray."

His voice remained steady.

"I'm on three."

He listened.

"Yes."

A pause.

"It's Emily."

The silence on the other end lasted only a second.

Daniel's expression became harder.

"There was an incident."

Preston stepped forward.

"Daniel."

Daniel turned away from him.

"No, she's stable."

He looked at the monitor.

"For now."

He ended the call.

Vanessa was no longer smiling.

"Who is Raymond?" she asked again.

Daniel put the phone away.

"My brother-in-law."

She rolled her eyes.

"And that matters because?"

Preston closed his eyes briefly.

Emily saw it.

Daniel saw it too.

"Preston can explain," Daniel said.

Vanessa looked at Preston.

"Explain what?"

He adjusted his tie.

"It's complicated."

Daniel's mouth curved without humor.

"No."

He looked toward the silver letters visible through the glass corridor outside.

SAINT CLAIRE WOMEN'S PAVILION.

"It's actually very simple."

Footsteps approached from the private elevator at the far end of the hall.

Two hospital administrators hurried past the doorway.

Behind them came three security officers and a tall older man in a dark suit.

Nurse Leah straightened instantly.

Dr. Cole glanced toward the hall.

Preston looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.

Vanessa whispered the question one more time.

"Who is that?"

Emily's father answered without looking at her.

Before Raymond reached the doorway, Preston moved into the hall and tried to intercept him.

Emily could see only fragments through the glass.

Preston extended a hand.

Raymond looked at it and did not take it.

That tiny refusal seemed to embarrass Preston more than security had.

Vanessa noticed too.

"This is Raymond Saint Claire?" she whispered.

Daniel did not answer her.

The hospital administrator beside Raymond quietly asked the security officer to keep the corridor clear.

Vanessa looked around as if the building itself had suddenly changed sides.

Emily remembered charity dinners where Preston had introduced Raymond as an old family friend.

Never as the chairman.

Never as trustee.

Never as the person whose approval sat behind nearly every project Preston bragged about in public.

She had assumed that understatement was Raymond's preference.

Now she wondered how much of it had been Preston's strategy.

Preston finally lowered his unused hand.

"Raymond, this is a misunderstanding."

Raymond looked past him toward Emily.

"Then misunderstandings are becoming unusually expensive around you."

Preston's mouth tightened.

Vanessa glanced at him.

For the first time, Emily saw suspicion between them.

Until that moment, Vanessa had believed Preston's confidence because she had never watched it fail in front of someone who knew the actual numbers.

Daniel moved closer to Emily's bed.

"Your uncle doesn't like scenes."

Emily gave him a tired look.

"Neither do I."

"No."

Daniel watched Raymond approach.

"But unlike Preston, Raymond knows the difference between preventing a scene and hiding one."
