Chapter 13 - The Call from Labor and Delivery.

The first contraction frightened Emily because it felt too deliberate to dismiss.

The second frightened everyone else.

Dr. Cole stood at the foot of the bed while Nurse Leah adjusted the monitor straps and called down to Labor and Delivery.

"Three minutes apart," Leah said.

Emily gripped the edge of the mattress.

"I'm only thirty-two weeks."

Dr. Cole kept his voice steady.

"I know."

"Make them stop."

He met her eyes.

"That is exactly what we're going to try to do."

Medication was ordered.

An IV line was started.

The room that had spent two days feeling like the center of a corporate investigation became a hospital room again in less than sixty seconds.

That change terrified Daniel more than any contract had.

He stood near the wall, pale and helpless, while the staff worked around his daughter.

Raymond arrived two minutes later.

He stopped in the doorway when he saw Emily breathing through another contraction.

"What's happening?"

Dr. Cole did not soften the answer.

"Possible preterm labor."

Raymond looked at Daniel.

Daniel said nothing.

For once, the two men who could move boards, lenders, lawyers, and security teams had nothing useful to do.

Emily noticed that too.

"Dad."

Daniel came immediately to her side.

"I'm here."

"Don't look like that."

"Like what?"

"Like you're about to fall apart."

Daniel laughed once through wet eyes.

"I'll work on it."

The next contraction rose.

Emily breathed slowly.

One breath.

Two breaths.

Three.

She had used counting to survive humiliation two days earlier.

Now she used it to protect the child who had unknowingly become the trigger for seventy million dollars of desperation.

Her phone rang on the bedside table.

Preston.

No one reached for it.

It rang again.

Then again.

Raymond finally silenced it.

Emily looked at him.

"Did they find him?"

"Not yet."

"The garage?"

"His car is still downstairs."

"Then where is he?"

Raymond's face tightened.

"We think he entered the service stairwell."

Daniel stared at him.

"With the folder?"

"Probably."

Emily closed her eyes.

"Forget the folder."

Both men looked at her.

"Emily—"

"Forget it."

Another contraction tightened across her abdomen.

She breathed through it.

"If those papers matter more than this room right now, then Preston has already turned us into him."

Raymond lowered his phone.

The words landed.

He took the chair on the other side of the bed.

Security could search without him.

For the first time since arriving at the hospital, Raymond Saint Claire stopped managing the crisis and simply held his niece's hand.

Thirty minutes passed.

The medication slowed the contractions but did not stop them entirely.

Dr. Cole performed another examination.

His expression remained controlled.

Emily read it anyway.

"Tell me."

"There has been some change."

"How much?"

"Enough that I want the neonatal team aware."

Daniel turned away briefly.

Emily kept looking at the doctor.

"Is my son coming today?"

"He might."

"Is he going to be okay?"

Dr. Cole pulled his chair closer.

"At thirty-two weeks, babies often do very well with the right support."

Emily heard the reassurance.

She also heard the word support.

Her eyes filled.

"I don't want him to start his life fighting."

Dr. Cole's voice softened.

"He already has you."

A nurse entered with another update.

"Security found Mr. Whitmore."

Emily's head turned.

Raymond stood.

"Where?"

"Service stairwell between levels two and three."

"The folder?"

"Not on him."

Raymond's face hardened.

"Where is he now?"

"Security interview room."

Emily looked at her uncle.

"Stay."

He hesitated.

"Raymond."

It was Daniel who spoke this time.

"Stay."

Raymond sat back down.

Preston's phone call came through hospital counsel instead.

Counsel asked whether Emily wanted to hear what he had to say.

Emily looked at Dr. Cole.

"Will it hurt the baby if I get angry?"

The doctor raised an eyebrow.

"That depends on how angry."

Emily almost smiled.

"Then no call."

Counsel relayed one sentence instead.

Preston claimed the folder had been stolen from him in the stairwell.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"By whom?"

Counsel's answer came through the speaker.

"He says Vanessa."

Emily stared at the ceiling.

Of course.

The people who had once presented themselves as a united future were now accusing each other of stealing documents in a hospital stairwell.

"Is Vanessa still here?" Emily asked.

Raymond checked with security.

She had left the property the previous evening.

Her phone was off.

No one knew where she was.

Emily felt another contraction begin.

This one was stronger.

Leah watched the monitor.

"Two and a half minutes."

Dr. Cole stood.

"We're moving to Labor and Delivery."

The words cut through every other concern.

Daniel gripped Emily's hand.

The bed began moving toward the door.

The corridor outside had been cleared.

As they rolled toward the elevator, Emily saw the silver letters of the Saint Claire name reflected in the glass.

She thought of her mother.

She thought of the trust.

She thought of all the years everyone had protected her from knowing what the name could do.

None of it mattered while she was being wheeled toward a delivery room too early.

At the elevator, the doors opened.

A security officer stood inside holding a sealed plastic evidence bag.

Raymond stopped.

Inside the bag was the missing brown leather folder.

"Where did you find it?"

The officer looked uncomfortable.

"In the women's restroom on level three."

Daniel frowned.

"Vanessa?"

The officer shook his head.

"We checked the camera."

Emily's bed paused at the threshold.

"Who put it there?"

The officer looked directly at Raymond.

"Marla Benson."

Everyone went silent.

Emily stared at the folder.

Marla had confessed.

Marla had exposed Preston.

And somehow Marla had also hidden the documents.

Then Emily's contraction peaked so sharply that the mystery disappeared beneath pain.

The elevator doors closed.

Ten minutes later, Labor and Delivery called the neonatal team.

Twenty minutes after that, Dr. Cole looked at Emily and gave her the news she had been dreading.

"We're not stopping this."

Emily's eyes filled.

The delivery team prepared Emily with a calmness she desperately needed.

A neonatal physician introduced herself as Dr. Priya Shah and explained what would happen if Noah needed breathing assistance.

Emily listened to every word.

"Will I get to see him?"

"We will bring him close as soon as it is safe."

"Promise?"

Dr. Shah nodded.

"I promise we will do everything we can."

Daniel changed into hospital scrubs and a cap that made him look both ridiculous and terrified.

Emily smiled despite the pain.

"Dad."

"What?"

"You look like you're about to rob a pharmacy."

He laughed too loudly.

The sound released something in both of them.

Raymond stood outside the room and called through the half-open door.

"Emily?"

"Yeah?"

"Your mother would be unbearable right now."

Emily's eyes filled.

"She'd be bossing everyone around."

"Including the doctors."

Dr. Cole looked toward the door.

"I heard that."

Raymond answered,

"She would have liked you."

Emily closed her eyes as another contraction rose.

For one moment, the room held her father, her uncle, the memory of her mother, and the son she had not yet met.

Preston was nowhere in it.

That absence hurt.

Then, unexpectedly, it also brought relief.

Emily understood that a family could be broken in one shape and still exist in another.

She squeezed Daniel's hand.

"Whatever happens next, don't let Preston make this day about him."

Daniel's voice shook.

"Never."

The team moved into position.

Dr. Cole looked at Emily.

"Ready?"

No one was ready for a child at thirty-two weeks.

Emily answered anyway.

May you like

"Then let's meet my son."
