Chapter 9 - The Second Fall.

The estate went into lockdown within thirty seconds.
Steel vehicle barriers rose beneath the main gates.
Exterior doors sealed.
Security officers moved through the corridors in pairs.
The ballroom guests were escorted into two lounges and told there had been an electrical issue.
Marcus knew the outage was not accidental.
The nursery circuit had been disabled manually from a maintenance panel inside the west service corridor.
Only staff and senior household members had access.
Rebecca had spent months learning the estate as though preparing for a day like this.
Adrian stayed with Lily.
He refused to leave her even when Marcus asked him to move to the secure office.
Claire stood three feet away, still trying to understand the impossible intimacy of being close to her daughter and having no right, yet, to touch her.
Lily held Evelyn's good hand.
Her eyes kept drifting toward Claire.
"Are you really Mara?"
Claire crouched several feet away.
"That is the name I've used for a while."
"But Rebecca called you Claire."
"Yes."
Lily frowned.
"My mommy was Claire."
Claire's throat tightened.
"I know."
"How?"
The adults exchanged looks.
Adrian started to speak.
Claire stopped him gently.
"Because I think I may have known your mommy very well."
Lily watched her.
"Did you love her?"
Claire could not answer immediately.
"Yes."
Her voice broke despite every effort.
"Very much."
Lily looked down.
"I don't remember her face anymore."
Claire's heart seemed to stop.
Evelyn squeezed Lily's hand.
"That is okay, sweetheart."
Lily whispered.
"Rebecca says forgetting means I didn't love her enough."
Adrian stood so abruptly the chair behind him scraped the floor.
"She said what?"
Lily flinched.
Adrian immediately softened.
"I'm sorry."
He knelt beside her.
"She was wrong."
"Completely wrong."
Lily's eyes filled.
"Sometimes I try really hard and all I can remember is her hands."
Claire looked at her own hands.
A small crescent scar crossed the base of her right thumb.
Lily stared at it.
Her breathing stopped.
"Mommy had that."
Claire raised her eyes.
Adrian looked at the scar too.
He knew it.
Claire had cut herself opening a can during their first camping trip.
The scar was private history written on skin surgery had not changed.
Lily reached one tentative hand toward Claire.
She stopped halfway.
Claire did not move closer.
"You can take your time."
Lily withdrew her hand.
"Okay."
The answer was small.
But Claire understood it was not rejection.
It was a door unlocked by one inch.
For the next twenty minutes, the sitting room became the safest place in the estate.
Officers checked the windows.
Marcus disabled every remote door control linked to Rebecca's credentials.
Evelyn found dry clothes for Lily.
Claire helped only when Lily asked.
When Lily struggled with one sleeve, Claire instinctively reached forward, then stopped.
"Want help?"
Lily nodded.
Claire gently guided her arm through.
Lily watched her face the entire time.
"Rebecca doesn't ask."
Claire's hands paused.
"She just does things."
Claire swallowed.
"Then we'll do it differently."
Lily touched the scar near Claire's temple again.
"Did the mountain do that?"
"Yes."
"Did it hurt?"
"A lot, I think."
"You don't remember?"
"Some pieces."
Lily considered that with the solemnity children sometimes bring to impossible facts.
"Maybe we both forgot things."
Lily looked down at the blanket around her knees.
"I forgot Mommy's laugh."
Claire almost answered, but Lily continued.
"Then when you laughed downstairs, I felt weird."
"Bad weird?"
"No."
Lily searched for the word.
"Like I knew it before I knew it."
Claire understood better than anyone.
Memory sometimes arrived as recognition without language.
"That's happened to me too."
Lily's eyes brightened slightly.
"With me?"
"The first time I saw your picture, my whole body knew before my brain did."
Lily considered that.
"So bodies remember?"
Claire smiled.
"Sometimes."
Lily touched the wheelchair rim.
"Mine remembers the shower."
Claire's smile faded.
"Then we'll help it learn new things too."
"Warm water."
"Open doors."
"People asking permission."
Lily nodded slowly.
The list became the first recovery plan they made together.
Claire smiled sadly.
"Maybe we did."
"Can we remember them together?"
Claire's throat closed.
"I'd like that."
Across the room, Adrian heard every word.
He turned away before Lily could see him crying.
"We found her."
Before Marcus could say more, Laura's phone buzzed with another update from the investigators at the maintenance gate.
They had recovered a torn strip of fabric caught on a service fence.
It matched the lining of Rebecca's gala dress.
That meant she had moved through the lower corridors before changing clothes.
A second object lay in the drainage channel beneath it.
A small plastic cap from an insulin-style syringe.
No syringe was found.
Claire stared at the evidence photograph.
"Does Rebecca use medication?"
Adrian shook his head.
Evelyn's face tightened.
"Lily does not either."
Torres immediately ordered toxicology screening on every open drink and medication container in the house.
Nothing dangerous was discovered, but the implication changed the search.
Rebecca had prepared more than one way to create confusion.
She had entered the gala expecting the evening might turn against her.
That made Claire wonder what else Rebecca had planted before anyone knew to look.
Adrian stood.
"Where?"
"East garage."
Marcus paused.
"She's with Calvin."
Adrian looked at Claire.
Laura had already moved toward the hall.
"Police?"
"Seven minutes out."
Then Marcus added.
"There is another problem."
The estate's accessible transport van was missing from its bay.
So was Lily's secondary wheelchair.
Adrian's stomach dropped.
"Why would she take Lily's chair?"
No one answered.
Claire did.
"To make it look like Lily left with her."
The thought was horrifying because it was clever.
If Rebecca escaped in the van with a child's wheelchair visible, security cameras might create the impression that Lily was inside.
That could split police resources.
Marcus reported that the van had exited through a maintenance gate before lockdown fully engaged.
Rebecca, however, had not been inside it.
Calvin had driven it alone.
Rebecca was still somewhere on the property.
"Diversion," Laura said.
Claire turned toward Lily.
"She wants everyone looking outward."
Evelyn's face changed.
"Then what does she want inside?"
Claire knew before anyone else.
"The original evidence."
The accident archive.
Adrian moved for the door.
Marcus stopped him over the earpiece.
"Stay where you are."
"She's going for Claire's files."
"My team is already there."
A burst of static interrupted him.
Then nothing.
Adrian looked at the ceiling speaker.
"Marcus?"
No response.
The estate lights flickered again.
Claire's body reacted before her mind did.
"Get Lily away from the windows."
Evelyn moved the wheelchair toward the inner wall.
Adrian locked the sitting room door.
A fire alarm began sounding somewhere in the west wing.
Rebecca had created another distraction.
Smoke appeared beneath the corridor doors moments later.
It smelled chemical rather than woody.
A smoke canister.
Not a real fire.
Laura covered her mouth with a cloth.
"She wants us to move."
Adrian looked toward the private passage connected to his office.
It led to the secure stairwell.
"We use the service route."
Claire shook her head.
A memory surfaced.
Rebecca touring the house before the crash.
Asking Adrian where the panic stairs led.
Claire had joked about Rebecca planning a robbery.
"She knows that route."
Adrian stared at her.
"Then where?"
Lily spoke.
"Mommy's closet."
Everyone looked at her.
Lily pointed toward the wall.
"There's another door."
Adrian frowned.
"What door?"
Evelyn's eyes widened.
"Claire showed her."
Before the accident, Claire had designed a hidden accessible passage from the nursery wing to the old dressing room so Lily could move between rooms during renovations without using the main staircase.
Adrian had forgotten it existed.
Claire had not.
The memory returned as Lily spoke.
They entered through a paneled section beside the bookcase.
The narrow corridor smelled of cedar and old paint.
Claire led them without thinking.
Left.
Right.
Down a gentle ramp.
Adrian watched her move through a house she supposedly had never entered.
Whatever doubt remained in him began collapsing.
At the end of the passage, Claire stopped.
A faint sound came from the other side of the door.
Someone breathing.
Adrian pushed Lily behind him.
Laura raised her phone to record.
Claire opened the door slowly.
Rebecca stood in the dressing room.
She held no weapon.
Only Claire's old wedding photograph.
For one absurd second, she looked almost sad.
Then she saw Claire.
"You should have stayed dead."
Adrian heard it.
So did Laura's recording phone.
Rebecca realized the mistake immediately.
She moved toward the fireplace.
A metal waste bin sat beside it filled with papers from the accident archive.
Flames climbed from the center.
Adrian lunged forward and pulled the bin away from the curtains.
Laura grabbed the fire extinguisher.
Rebecca ran.
She disappeared through the main dressing-room door.
Claire followed before anyone could stop her.
"Claire!"
Adrian's voice echoed behind her.
Rebecca reached the grand staircase.
She looked back.
Claire was only ten feet behind.
Then Rebecca smiled.
Not because she was escaping.
Because Lily's wheelchair was rolling toward the top of the staircase.
Somehow, in the confusion, the chair's brake had been released.
Lily was still in it.
Evelyn was running after her.
May you like
Claire did not think.
She turned away from Rebecca and ran toward her daughter.
