Chapter 8 - The Locked Nursery.

The ballroom became silent in pieces.
First the nearest guests stopped talking.
Then people farther away noticed the broken glass.
Finally the string quartet faltered and stopped.
Adrian looked at Rebecca.
"What did you call her?"
Rebecca blinked.
"I said Clare."
"You said Claire."
"It's a common name."
Claire did not rescue her.
She stood beside Lily with one hand resting against the back of an empty chair because she needed something solid beneath her fingers.
Adrian looked at her.
"Is your name Claire?"
Jonah stepped forward.
"This is not the place."
Rebecca seized the interruption.
"Exactly."
She turned toward the guests with a practiced smile.
"Please excuse us."
Adrian ignored her.
His gaze stayed on Claire.
"Who are you?"
Claire had imagined answering that question a hundred times.
Every version sounded impossible now.
"I don't completely know."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"That is not an answer."
"It is the most truthful answer I have."
Laura Chen approached quietly.
"Mr. Bennett, we have documentation that may explain."
Rebecca looked at Laura.
Recognition flashed again.
"You're an investigator."
Laura nodded.
"Former federal."
Rebecca turned to Adrian.
"This is a setup."
Adrian's eyes remained on Claire.
Lily suddenly spoke.
"She smells like Mommy."
Every adult froze.
Claire looked down.
Lily's face showed confusion, not certainty.
"Like flowers," Lily added.
Claire's hand moved to her throat.
Lavender.
She had used lavender hand cream for years.
After the accident, she had chosen the same scent without knowing why.
Evelyn bent beside Lily.
"Sweetheart, let's get you somewhere quiet."
Rebecca stepped forward.
"I'll take her."
Lily grabbed Evelyn's sleeve.
"No."
The word was louder than Lily intended.
Several guests heard.
Rebecca stopped.
Adrian looked at his daughter.
Then at Rebecca.
Whatever social instinct he had left disappeared.
"Marcus."
Marcus appeared beside him.
"Clear the east sitting room."
"Done."
"And nobody leaves the property until I say otherwise."
Rebecca's head snapped toward him.
"You cannot detain guests."
"I'm not detaining anyone."
Adrian's voice was flat.
"I'm asking my security team to manage a private family matter before this becomes a spectacle."
He looked at Claire.
"You, your companions, Evelyn, and Rebecca come with me."
Lily whispered.
"Me too?"
Adrian's face softened immediately.
"Only if you want to."
Lily looked at Claire.
Then Rebecca.
"I want Evelyn."
"Then Evelyn stays with you."
Rebecca's lips pressed together.
They moved through the hallway toward the east sitting room.
Halfway there, Lily suddenly pointed toward the old nursery corridor.
"My rabbit."
Evelyn looked down.
The stuffed rabbit was missing from Lily's lap.
"I left him in the nursery before the gala."
Adrian glanced at Marcus.
"I'll get it."
Lily shook her head.
"I want to go."
The old nursery had been locked for nearly two years.
After Claire disappeared, Adrian could not bear to change it.
Lily eventually moved to a larger accessible bedroom, but some of her childhood things remained untouched.
Evelyn had opened the room earlier that day to retrieve the blue velvet dress.
Now the door was locked again.
Evelyn frowned.
"I didn't lock this."
Marcus tried the handle.
"Who has the key?"
Adrian looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca's expression remained blank.
"Don't look at me."
Marcus used his master key.
The door opened.
The room smelled faintly of dust and lavender.
Claire stopped in the doorway.
Memory struck with physical force.
Yellow walls.
Moon-shaped night-light.
A white crib converted into a toddler bed.
Claire sitting on the rug while Lily stacked wooden blocks.
Evelyn laughing from the rocking chair.
Adrian walking in with takeout food because they had forgotten dinner.
Claire staggered.
Jonah caught her elbow.
Adrian saw.
"What happened?"
Claire could not answer.
She walked toward the bookshelf as if following instructions only she could hear.
Her hand moved to the third shelf.
She pulled out a faded copy of The Secret Garden.
Behind it was a shallow recess in the wall.
Adrian's face changed.
"How did you know that was there?"
Claire stared at the opening.
Inside was a small wooden music box.
She whispered.
"Because I hid it there."
Rebecca stepped backward.
Marcus noticed.
Claire lifted the box.
It had a tiny painted fox on the lid.
Lily gasped.
"Mommy's box."
Claire closed her eyes.
The words nearly destroyed her.
Adrian moved closer.
"Claire had that before we met."
Claire's hands trembled.
"Her grandmother gave it to her when she was nine."
Adrian went pale.
That detail had never been public.
Rebecca recovered first.
"She could have researched it."
Claire looked at her.
"Research what?"
Rebecca did not answer.
Claire opened the music box.
A delicate melody played.
Lily began humming before the second measure.
Claire did too.
The same melody.
At the same tempo.
Adrian stared at them.
His eyes filled despite his attempt to stop it.
Claire lifted the velvet lining.
Beneath it was a microSD card wrapped in tissue.
Marcus stepped forward.
"Do not touch it further."
Rebecca moved suddenly.
Not toward the door.
Toward the music box.
Marcus intercepted her.
"Back up."
She stared at him.
"This is absurd."
Adrian's voice came from behind her.
"Why do you care what's on that card?"
Rebecca turned.
"Because strangers are tearing apart our home."
Claire flinched at our home.
Adrian heard it too.
"This was Claire's home."
Rebecca's face tightened.
"Claire is dead."
The music box continued playing.
Claire looked at her.
"You keep saying that like you need it to be true."
Silence.
Rebecca's eyes met hers.
For the first time, the civility vanished.
"You have no idea what you are walking into."
Claire's voice became steady.
"I think I walked into it two years ago."
Adrian reached for Claire's arm before Marcus touched the card.
"If this is really yours, are you ready to see it?"
Claire looked at him.
The question surprised her.
Two years earlier, Adrian would have opened the file first and apologized later.
Now he waited.
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
Lily remained beside Evelyn near the nursery door.
Claire did not want the child watching evidence of the crash plot.
She crouched.
"Lily, would you go with Evelyn to the sitting room for a few minutes?"
Lily immediately looked frightened.
"Are you sending me away because I did something?"
Claire's heart tightened.
"No."
"I'm asking because this might be upsetting, and you get to decide whether you want to hear it."
Lily looked toward the laptop.
Then at Rebecca.
"I want to stay."
Rebecca's face tightened.
Claire nodded.
"Then you stay."
She moved Lily farther from Rebecca and positioned herself between them.
It was such a small act.
Lily noticed every inch of it.
There was one video file.
The timestamp showed 8:11 a.m. on the day of the crash.
The image opened on Claire's old garage.
The angle was low and partially obstructed.
A hidden camera.
Claire remembered installing it after discovering someone had accessed the garage at night.
The video showed her car.
At 8:16, Rebecca entered.
She looked around.
Then she crouched beside the front wheel.
The camera could not show exactly what her hands were doing.
But she remained there for four minutes.
When she stood, her fingers were dark with grease.
Rebecca's breathing changed.
Adrian stared at the screen.
At 8:21, Calvin Rusk entered the garage.
He handed Rebecca a small tool.
At 8:24, they left.
At 8:39, Claire entered carrying Lily.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Adrian turned toward Rebecca.
She was already backing toward the nursery door.
Marcus moved to block it.
Rebecca gave a strange, almost peaceful smile.
Then every light in the nursery went out.
Lily screamed once.
Not from pain.
From terror.
In the darkness, something heavy struck the floor.

By the time emergency lights flickered on, Rebecca was gone.
So was the microSD card.
