Chapter 2 - The First Lie in the File

The sound of approaching sirens reached the estate before anyone saw flashing lights through the trees.
Grace recognized the sound and immediately changed in a way Nathan could not ignore.
Her shoulders tightened, her eyes moved toward exits, and her hand found Lily's without conscious thought.
Nathan had seen fear in boardrooms, courtrooms, and negotiations where fortunes moved on a signature.
This was different.
Grace did not fear being questioned.
She feared being rewritten.
Five years of manufactured records had taught her that an official uniform did not automatically mean an official truth.
Nathan wanted to tell her that his name would protect her, then remembered that his name had been the original weapon.
The realization left him with no comforting sentence that did not sound arrogant.
So he stood beside her instead.
Daniel's arrival brought legal order to the room, but not emotional safety.
Victoria had already begun reshaping herself into a victim before the first officer crossed the threshold.
Nathan watched her smooth her hair, lower her voice, and place one trembling hand against the kitchen island.
It was a performance he might once have believed.
Now he knew exactly what had happened before the audience arrived.
The first police cruiser reached Nathan's front steps three minutes later.
Two more vehicles followed before Daniel Reed's black sedan appeared at the gate.
Nathan watched from the foyer while Grace stood behind him with Lily held tightly against her side.
Victoria had changed her expression completely by the time the doorbell rang.
The rage was gone.
In its place was a pale, shaken woman who looked as though she had survived something terrifying.
Nathan almost admired the speed of the transformation.
Officer James Holloway entered first with a woman in plain clothes who introduced herself as Detective Marla Chen.
Chen took one look around the foyer and immediately noticed the security officers positioned near every exit.
"Mr. Cole, we received a report concerning a possible kidnapping and domestic disturbance," she said.
Nathan stepped aside.
"You received a false report."
Victoria moved toward the detective.
"Thank God you are here."
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
"Victoria."
She ignored him.
"That woman brought a child into the house and attacked me when I confronted her."
Lily began trembling.
Grace crouched beside her even though the movement clearly hurt.
Detective Chen noticed the child's reaction.
"Who is the legal guardian of the child?"
"I am," Grace said.
Victoria spoke over her.
"She says that, but Nathan has never seen the child before today."
Nathan turned toward Victoria.
"That is because you and your family helped make sure I never knew she existed."
Officer Holloway looked between them.
Detective Chen remained composed.
"Mr. Cole, I need facts, not accusations."
Daniel Reed entered behind the officers carrying a leather briefcase and looking irritated enough to make everyone else quiet.
"Then you will appreciate the security footage," he said.
Detective Chen looked at him.
"And you are?"
"Daniel Reed, counsel for Nathan Cole and Cole Meridian Holdings."
He showed his identification, then turned toward Nathan.
"The footage is preserved."
Nathan nodded.
Daniel addressed the detective again.
"It shows Ms. Victoria Lang striking Grace Mercer with a cane while Ms. Mercer is protecting the child."
Victoria's face tightened.
"That footage does not show what happened before."
"It begins forty-two minutes before the first strike," Daniel said.
"Would you like to reconsider that statement?"
For the first time, Victoria lost control of her breathing.
Detective Chen asked to view the recording immediately.
Nathan led them to the security office rather than playing it in front of Lily.
Grace stayed in the library with Mrs. Alvarez and the child.
The video was worse than Nathan remembered because the camera had captured Victoria's face clearly.
It showed Grace entering the kitchen with Lily after Lily woke from a nap in the staff apartment.
It showed Victoria arriving unexpectedly and demanding to know why the child was in the house.
It showed Grace trying to leave.
Then it showed Victoria blocking the doorway and taking the cane from a decorative stand near the mudroom.
There was no sound from that camera, but the violence needed no translation.
Detective Chen watched the clip twice.
Officer Holloway looked uncomfortable.
Victoria stood rigidly at the back of the room.
"I want the original file," Chen said.
Daniel shook his head.
"You can have a forensic copy."
"The original server remains here until we have a preservation order and an independent digital examiner present."
Chen regarded him for a moment, then nodded.
"Reasonable."
Nathan looked at Victoria.
"You told them Grace attacked you."
Victoria folded her arms.
"She threatened me."
"With what?"
"With destroying our marriage."
Nathan stared at her.
"That marriage no longer exists."
Victoria's face changed.
The words struck where Nathan knew they would.
"You do not mean that."
"I do."
"Two weeks before the wedding?"
"Two minutes would be too long."
Victoria's eyes grew bright, but no tears fell.
"You are choosing a maid who vanished five years ago over the woman who stood beside you while your father was dying."
Nathan felt the old manipulation wrapped inside the sentence.
Victoria had always known which memory would slow him down.
It did not work this time.
"I am choosing the truth over someone who attacked a child and her mother in my house."
Detective Chen interrupted before Victoria could reply.
"Ms. Lang, I need you to come with us for an interview."
Victoria looked at the detective in disbelief.
"Am I under arrest?"
"Not at this moment."
Daniel stepped closer to Nathan.
"That report about Grace is not the only problem."
Nathan kept his eyes on Victoria.
"What else?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"There is an active child welfare alert attached to Grace's name."
Nathan turned toward him.
"Based on what?"
"A report claiming she threatened to flee the country with Lily using falsified documents."
Nathan felt anger rise again.
"Filed when?"
"This morning."
Grace had been working in his house since seven.
Someone had started the machinery before the confrontation ever happened.
That meant Victoria's attack was not the plan.
It was a mistake inside a larger plan.
Nathan looked at her differently after that realization.
Victoria noticed.
"What?"
"You were not supposed to lose control today," Nathan said.
Her face went still.
Daniel glanced at him.
Nathan continued.
"Someone had already filed reports against Grace before you picked up that cane."
"So what was supposed to happen?"
Victoria did not answer.
Detective Chen stepped between them.
"Enough."
She turned to Victoria.
"You need to come with me now."
Victoria's attorney arrived ten minutes later, somehow already briefed on details Nathan had only just learned.
His name was Malcolm Voss, a silver-haired litigator who had represented the Lang family for decades.
Nathan remembered him from charity galas and board dinners.
Voss smiled as though this were a scheduling dispute.
"Nathan, emotions are high."
"Do not speak to me like you know me," Nathan said.
Voss's smile faded.
He guided Victoria outside without allowing her to answer more questions.
Detective Chen stayed behind.
"Mr. Cole, I am going to be straightforward with you," she said.
Nathan appreciated the warning.
"The reports against Ms. Mercer are detailed."
"There are copies of travel bookings, correspondence, and a statement from a former neighbor."
"If they are fabricated, somebody invested real effort."
Grace appeared in the doorway behind them.
"They always do."
Chen turned.
Grace held a sleeping Lily against her shoulder.
"Five years ago they created records that made me look dangerous before anyone even asked me a question," Grace said.
"They are doing the same thing again."
Chen studied her.
"Who is they?"
Grace looked at Nathan.
Nathan answered.
"My father, before his death."
He forced himself to continue.
"And possibly the Lang family."
Chen did not react to the names.
"Do you have proof?"
Grace shook her head.
"Not anymore."
Nathan caught the final word.
"What do you mean, not anymore?"
Grace hesitated.
"I kept one thing."
Daniel closed the security-room door.
"What thing?"
Grace shifted Lily gently.
"A voice message your father left me the night before I disappeared."
Nathan stopped breathing for a second.
"You have his voice?"
"I had it on an old phone."
"I hid the phone with someone I trusted because I was afraid keeping it near Lily would put her at risk."
Daniel's expression sharpened.
"Who has it?"
Grace looked toward the windows.
"A woman named Evelyn Price."
Nathan recognized the name.
Evelyn had been his father's executive assistant for twenty-two years.
She had vanished from Cole Meridian after the funeral without even attending the memorial reception.
"Evelyn knew?" Nathan asked.
"She knew enough to help me leave."
Detective Chen stepped closer.
"Where is she now?"
Grace's face fell.
"I do not know."
"She stopped answering me eight months ago."
Nathan remembered an old internal notice stating Evelyn had relocated to Arizona.
He had never questioned it.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
"I will find her."
Grace looked at him.
"Be careful."
"The last time I spoke to Evelyn, she told me someone had started asking about Lily."
Nathan looked down the hallway where his daughter slept in the library.
The idea that people had been tracking a four-year-old long before he knew her name made something inside him turn cold.
Detective Chen received a call and stepped away to answer it.
When she returned, her face had changed.
"Ms. Mercer, I need to ask you something."
Grace stiffened.
"Did you purchase two airline tickets to Montreal for tomorrow afternoon?"
"No."
"Did you apply for a passport for Lily under the name Lily Hart?"
"No."
Chen held Grace's gaze.
"Because we have electronic records showing both."
Daniel swore under his breath.
Nathan took one step forward.
"Then the records are false."
Chen nodded once.
"That is possible."
"But until we prove it, child services may ask questions."
Grace went pale.
Nathan moved between her and the detective almost instinctively.
"No one is taking Lily anywhere."
Chen did not back down.
"Do not make promises you cannot legally keep, Mr. Cole."
Nathan hated that she was right.
Daniel touched his arm.
"Nathan, we need paternity established immediately."
Grace looked at him.
"You think that will protect her?"
"It gives Nathan legal standing," Daniel said.
"Standing is not the same as safety," Grace replied.
Nathan turned toward her.
"Then tell me what safety looks like."
Grace's eyes moved toward Lily.
"For five years, safety looked like nobody knowing who her father was."
Nathan absorbed the sentence without defending himself.
"That is over now."
Grace nodded sadly.
"Yes."
"And that means the people who were afraid of her existence five years ago have a reason to be afraid again."
Daniel's phone buzzed.
He looked down and went silent.
Nathan knew immediately that something had happened.
"What?"
Daniel raised his eyes.
"Evelyn Price's Arizona address is fake."
"The house belongs to a holding company connected to Lang Strategic Partners."
Grace closed her eyes.
Nathan felt the room tilt again.
The fake police report was not an isolated lie.
The airline tickets were not an isolated lie.
Evelyn's disappearance was not an isolated lie.
Somebody had spent years maintaining a world in which Grace and Lily could be erased whenever necessary.
Nathan looked at Daniel.
"Find the real Evelyn."
"Use people outside Cole Meridian."
Daniel nodded.
"And Nathan?"
"Yes?"
"There is one more thing."
Daniel turned his phone around.
On the screen was a scanned corporate memo dated five years earlier.
The subject line read: MERCER CONTINGENCY.
Nathan stared at it.
At the bottom of the page were two initials.
May you like
One belonged to his father.
The other belonged to Victoria's mother.
