Chapter 13 - The House That Watched Them

Pickles sat inside a clear evidence bag on Detective Chen's table while Lily asked when her fox was coming home.
Nathan found the image unbearable.
The toy had become important precisely because it seemed harmless.
It was the first thing Lily chose in his house without anyone explaining what it meant.
Now even that choice had been invaded by someone else's plan.
Grace refused to let the discovery destroy the toy for Lily.
"Take the device out, fix the seam, and give him back," she said.
"The bad thing was inside the fox."
"The fox was not the bad thing."
Nathan remembered the sentence later because it applied to more than a stuffed animal.
He was learning to separate institutions from the people who corrupted them, family history from family destiny, and inheritance from obligation.
The tracker investigation also changed the scale of the threat.
It was no longer only about Grace returning.
The devices had been planted before her job application.
Someone had prepared for children who might appear in Nathan's orbit long before Lily walked through the kitchen.
That level of planning required access, patience, and a person inside the house who understood where ordinary objects could disappear into storage.
The tracker inside Pickles was older than anyone expected.
Its manufacturer had discontinued that model almost two years earlier.
Detective Chen's technicians traced the serial number to a bulk purchase made by a private security reseller.
The reseller's customer record listed Northstar Civic Solutions.
Nathan felt no surprise anymore.
Only anger with sharper edges.
The harder question was how the device entered a locked storage room inside his home.
Mrs. Alvarez arrived for questioning voluntarily.
She looked offended that anyone thought she might need a lawyer.
Daniel insisted she take one anyway.
"I found the fox in the west storage closet," she said.
"It was in a sealed charity box with twelve other toys."
Nathan remembered the boxes.
Cole Meridian's foundation stored excess gifts after holiday drives before redistributing them.
"Who had access?" Chen asked.
Mrs. Alvarez counted on her fingers.
"Housekeeping supervisors."
"Facilities."
"The family office events team."
"Security."
"And whoever your father gave keys to without telling the rest of us."
Nathan almost smiled.
"That last category is becoming uncomfortably large."
Chen asked when the box arrived.
Mrs. Alvarez thought for a moment.
"Last December."
Grace looked up.
"Before I applied for the job."
Everyone went silent.
The tracker had entered Nathan's house months before Grace returned.
That meant it had not been planted specifically for Lily after the confrontation.
Either someone anticipated Grace's return far earlier than they understood, or the toy was one of several prepared tracking devices.
Chen ordered every remaining charity box recovered.
Security found nine stuffed animals still in storage.
Three contained identical trackers.
Nathan stared at the evidence photographs spread across Daniel's conference table.
"Who were the other toys meant for?"
Chen shook her head.
"We do not know."
The foundation distribution records showed several boxes had gone to shelters, hospitals, and employee families.
Daniel looked sick.
"If the trackers were active, Northstar could have monitored children unrelated to this case."
Grace folded her arms around herself.
"Then Lily was never the only person they treated like a location on a screen."
The manufacturer logs showed each tracker had been activated under an account named COVENANT-4.
Northstar's seized database connected that account to a user whose login originated regularly from Nathan's mansion.
The device was not just planted there.
Someone inside the house had managed the account.
Chen asked Nathan for a list of all staff with network access during the previous two years.
The list contained thirty-seven names.
Nathan recognized every one.
That frightened him more than a stranger would have.
They narrowed the login times against payroll and entry logs.
COVENANT-4 had been accessed most often late at night, after household staff shifts changed.
One employee appeared inside the property on every relevant date.
Colin Hayes.
Nathan's estate operations manager.
Colin had worked for the Cole family for eleven years.
He supervised repairs, utilities, vehicle maintenance, vendor access, and the house's physical inventory.
He was the person Nathan trusted to know where every key existed.
Nathan remembered Colin helping coordinate his father's funeral.
He remembered him repairing a broken heater in the staff apartments during a winter storm.
He remembered thanking him personally for keeping the estate quiet after the kitchen attack.
Grace saw Nathan's face.
"You trusted him."
"Yes."
Chen cautioned them not to confront Colin.
He was still reporting to work.
They needed to see what he did after investigators quietly changed the mansion's network credentials.
At seven that evening, Colin entered the estate through the service gate.
He went directly to the facilities office.
A hidden camera installed by Chen's team showed him trying three passwords.
All failed.
Colin immediately took out a separate phone.
He sent a text to an unsaved number.
Access changed.
Need cleanup tonight.
Chen obtained emergency authority to monitor the outgoing line.
The reply arrived twenty seconds later.
Burn local devices.
Leave before 22:00.
Nathan watched the live feed from a surveillance van three blocks away.
Grace sat beside him despite Daniel's objections.
"I spent five years being kept away from the rooms where people decided my life," she said.
"I am done waiting outside."
Nathan did not argue.
Colin opened a locked cabinet beneath his desk.
Inside were three encrypted drives and a stack of prepaid phones.
He placed them into a canvas bag.
Then he removed a small bottle of accelerant from a maintenance shelf.
Chen's team moved immediately.
Colin was arrested before he reached the furnace room.
He did not resist.
That almost made it worse.
He sat in an interview room at the local station two hours later with his attorney beside him.
Nathan was not allowed inside.
Grace was not either.
Chen emerged after midnight carrying a notebook.
"He is talking."
Nathan stood.
"Why?"
"Because Northstar stopped paying him six months ago."
Grace gave a bitter laugh.
"Loyalty has a billing cycle."
Chen continued.
"Colin says Danner recruited him four years ago."
"At first he was paid to report unusual visitors, staff changes, and household schedules."
"Then Victoria began using the same channel."
Nathan's stomach tightened.
"Did Colin know about Lily?"
"Not until Grace applied for the housekeeping position."
Nathan frowned.
"But the trackers were planted before that."
Chen nodded.
"According to Colin, those were part of a broader contingency program."
"He was told certain toys might be used for children visiting the house during family events."
Grace looked horrified.
"Why?"
Chen consulted her notes.
"To identify potential heirs, undisclosed relationships, and what Northstar called reputational vulnerabilities."
Nathan stared at her.
"My family was tracking guests' children to see whether anyone might be related to us?"
"Colin claims Helena wanted early warning of any claim against the succession trust."
The absurdity was so monstrous Nathan almost could not process it.
People had turned DNA, affection, and childhood into risk categories.
Chen added one more detail.
"Colin says Victoria instructed him to make sure Grace's job application was approved."
Grace went still.
Nathan looked at her.
"Victoria brought you into the house."
Chen nodded.
"That is his claim."
Grace's voice became quiet.
"Why?"
Nathan answered before Chen could.
"To watch you more closely."
Grace shook her head.
"She could already watch me through Northstar."
Daniel saw the deeper possibility.
"Not only to watch."
Everyone looked at him.
"If Grace worked inside Nathan's home and Lily appeared there, Victoria could manufacture a trespass, extortion, or custody narrative."
Nathan felt cold.
"She wanted a confrontation."
Grace remembered the day of the attack.
"She kept asking why I had brought Lily into 'her house.'"
Nathan's jaw tightened.
"It was never her house."
Grace looked at him.
"That is not the point."
"She needed witnesses to see me where she could say I did not belong."
Chen nodded.
"Colin says he was instructed to make sure two exterior cameras were offline that afternoon."
Nathan stared at her.
"But the kitchen camera stayed on."
"Colin claims Victoria did not know about the newer interior camera you installed after the insurance inspection."
The footage that saved Grace had existed because of a mundane insurance recommendation.
Again, ordinary chance had broken a carefully built plan.
Nathan asked about the threat calls.
Colin denied making them.
He said Danner handled intimidation personally or through contractors.
He also claimed Helena had stopped using Danner directly months earlier.
"Why?" Grace asked.
Chen's answer was simple.
"Because Victoria took over."
Nathan felt the room become smaller.
Victoria had not merely been her mother's instrument.
She had become the active manager of the operation.
Chen showed them a recovered message from Colin's phone.
It had been sent six months earlier from Victoria's Northstar account.
Subject: MERCER RETURN OPTION.
Text: Put her where Nathan can see her without knowing why.
Grace read the sentence twice.
"She wanted me near him."
Nathan understood the cruelty.
"She wanted to see whether I recognized Lily."
Daniel shook his head.
"Or whether Grace would tell you."
"If she did, Victoria could activate the legal attack immediately."
Grace sat down.
"And if I did not?"
Nobody answered.
The kitchen attack answered for them.
Victoria had eventually lost patience.
Chen's phone rang.
She stepped away, listened, and returned with a new expression.
"We found Victoria."
Nathan stood.
"Where?"
"She checked into a private wellness clinic under her middle name."
Grace stared at her.
"She was hiding in a clinic?"
"Her attorney says she had an emotional collapse."
Nathan's anger surfaced.
"Convenient."
Chen held up a hand.
"She is now in custody on charges related to the assault and evidence tampering."
"Federal charges may follow."
Grace closed her eyes.
Nathan expected relief.
It did not come.
Victoria knew too much.
Helena was still free.
Danner was still missing.
The second ledger was still gone.
And the custody threat against Lily had begun three days after her birth.
Nathan looked at Chen.
"Ask Victoria about Phase II."
Chen nodded.
"We already did."
"What did she say?"
Chen hesitated.
"She laughed."
Grace's face drained.
Nathan's voice became dangerous.
May you like
"Why?"
"She said you are still looking in the wrong family."
