Chapter 2: The Recording That Stopped the Wedding

Chapter 2: The Recording That Stopped the Wedding

The ballroom remained frozen.

Every eye followed Zach as he clutched the tablet against his chest.

Richard forced another smile.

“Jasmine, they're frightened. Let Marcus take them upstairs.”

“No.”

Jasmine slowly pulled her hand away from Richard's.

“I asked a question.”

She looked at her son.

“What's on the tablet?”

Richard's voice sharpened.

“It's probably one of Zach's games.”

Zoe stepped between Richard and her mother.

“He doesn't want you to hear it.”

Guests exchanged uneasy glances.

The officiant quietly closed his ceremony book.

Jasmine knelt in front of her children.

“Sweetheart... tell me.”

Zach swallowed.

“We heard Richard talking.”

Richard laughed.

“Children imagine all sorts of things.”

“We recorded it.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Richard lunged toward the tablet.

Marcus moved at the same instant.

But before either man reached it...

Tasha snatched the device from Zach and handed it directly to the ballroom's audiovisual technician.

“Play it.”

Richard shouted.

“Don't!”

Too late.

His own voice echoed through the ballroom speakers.

“…the woman is brilliant.”

“…the kids are temporary.”

“…the children are leverage.”

The final sentence exploded across the silent room.

“If she refuses... the children are leverage.”

Gasps rippled through the ballroom.

Several investors slowly lowered their champagne glasses.

Jasmine couldn't breathe.

Richard stepped forward.

“You're hearing this out of context.”

“Really?”

Dr. Eleanor Simmons walked into the aisle.

“Perhaps we should hear the rest.”

She handed another flash drive to the technician.

“This contains internal documents from Caldwell Technologies.”

Richard spun around.

“You had no right—”

“I had every right after your engineers came to me.”

Screens surrounding the ballroom came alive.

Financial transfers.

Illegal shell companies.

Encrypted contracts.

Dozens of signatures.

Richard Caldwell.

Every guest stared.

Among them sat journalists.

Federal prosecutors.

Corporate board members.

People Richard never expected to witness his collapse.

Marcus quietly slipped toward the exit.

Before he reached it...

FBI agents entered through the rear ballroom doors.

“Nobody move.”

Richard's face finally lost all color.

“You set me up.”

May you like

“No,” Jasmine answered softly.

“You underestimated three children.”
