Chapter 1: A Warning Hidden Behind Congratulations

Chapter 1: A Warning Hidden Behind Congratulations

“The good kind of surprised?” Jasmine asked, trying to laugh.

Dr. Eleanor Simmons returned the smile, but it never reached her eyes.

“I hope so.”

The room grew quiet.

Tasha sensed the tension and excused herself to check on the bridesmaids, leaving Jasmine alone with the woman who had known her longer than almost anyone else.

Eleanor reached into her handbag and carefully placed a small flash drive on the vanity.

“I almost didn't bring this.”

Jasmine frowned.

“What is it?”

“Three months ago, one of my former graduate students accepted a cybersecurity contract for Caldwell Technologies.”

Jasmine's heartbeat slowed.

“He resigned after only two weeks.”

“Why?”

“He said the company wasn't building security software.”

Eleanor looked directly into Jasmine's eyes.

“They were building surveillance tools capable of harvesting private financial data from hospitals, charities, and government contractors.”

Jasmine blinked.

“That can't be right.”

“I thought the same thing.”

Eleanor slid a folder across the table.

Inside were copied emails, engineering diagrams, and internal memos.

The signature on nearly every page belonged to Richard Caldwell.

“No...”

“I spent weeks verifying everything before bringing it to you.”

Jasmine stared at the documents.

“But Richard said his company protects people.”

“He protects profits.”

Silence settled between them.

Finally Eleanor spoke again.

“I didn't come here to ruin your wedding.”

“You came because you're afraid.”

“Yes.”

Jasmine looked toward the window overlooking downtown Chicago.

Richard had transformed her life.

He had paid off her student loans.

Bought gifts for the children.

Promised to fund Taylor Shield.

He had been patient.

Kind.

Generous.

Yet...

There had always been moments.

The way his smile disappeared whenever the triplets interrupted conversations.

The strange phone calls he always answered outside.

The contracts he insisted she sign without reading.

“I'll ask him myself,” Jasmine whispered.

Eleanor nodded.

“Good.”

Then she stood.

“But ask him before you say 'I do.'”

Across the hotel, Richard Caldwell stood inside the presidential suite adjusting his cuff links.

His chief of security, Marcus Hale, entered without knocking.

“We have a problem.”

Richard didn't even look up.

“What now?”

“The children left their room twenty minutes ago.”

Richard's expression hardened.

“Find them.”

“We're already searching.”

Richard walked toward the window overlooking Michigan Avenue.

“They've been asking too many questions.”

Marcus hesitated.

“Do you think they know?”

Richard finally turned.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“They're six years old.”

“They're unusually intelligent.”

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Then make sure they stay occupied until after the ceremony.”

Marcus nodded.

“And the prototype?”

Richard smiled.

“Once Jasmine signs the marriage license, Taylor Shield becomes joint intellectual property under the merger agreement.”

Marcus frowned.

“She doesn't know that.”

“She won't need to.”

Meanwhile...

The triplets were nowhere near the playroom.

They had wandered into the hotel's executive conference floor after Zoe insisted she wanted to "see where billionaires make boring decisions."

Most meeting rooms were empty.

Except one.

The door stood slightly open.

Inside, Richard's laptop rested on a polished mahogany table beside an unlocked phone.

“No touching,” Zayn whispered.

“We're leaving.”

But Zach had already noticed something.

“The phone is recording.”

“What?”

He quietly picked it up.

A recording application was running.

Someone had accidentally left it active after a meeting.

Voices echoed through the speaker.

Richard's voice.

“…the woman is brilliant.”

Another man laughed.

“And the kids?”

“They're temporary.”

“What if she refuses the merger?”

“She won't after the wedding.”

“And if she does?”

A long pause.

Then Richard answered coldly.

“The children are leverage.”

Zayn's face turned white.

Zoe clenched both fists.

“Mom has to hear this.”

Just then...

Footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Marcus.

“Run,” Zach whispered.

The three children grabbed the phone, copied the recording onto Zach's tablet in seconds, and sprinted through the maze of conference rooms as security guards shouted behind them.

By the time the ceremony began...

They were still running.

Straight toward the ballroom.

May you like

Straight toward the altar.

And toward the truth Richard Caldwell had spent years making sure no one would ever hear.
