Chapter 2: A Father's Promise

Chapter 2: A Father's Promise

For the next several weeks, Nathan never forced his way into Emily's life.

Instead, he quietly began fixing everything he could.

Every overdue rent payment disappeared.

The boys suddenly qualified for a scholarship at the neighborhood preschool.

The broken heater in Emily's apartment was replaced overnight.

No notes.

No signatures.

No credit.

Emily knew exactly who was responsible.

One afternoon she found Nathan sitting alone on a park bench while Noah and Liam chased pigeons nearby.

He didn't interrupt.

He simply watched them laugh.

"They like cinnamon rolls," Emily finally said.

Nathan smiled weakly.

"I noticed."

A long silence followed.

"I missed every first step."

Emily nodded.

"Every first word."

Another nod.

"I can't get those years back."

"No," she answered softly.

"You can't."

Nathan lowered his eyes.

"But if you'll let me..."

"I'd like to be there for everything that's left."

At that moment, Noah wandered over carrying a tiny toy truck.

"Mister..."

Nathan looked up.

"Can you fix it?"

The plastic wheel had fallen off.

Nathan carefully snapped it back into place before handing it over.

"There you go."

Noah's face lit up.

"Thank you!"

He ran away laughing.

Nathan blinked back tears.

It was the first thing he had ever fixed for his son.

Emily saw the tears.

May you like

For the first time in years...

She believed they were real.
