Chapter 1: The Truth Buried in Silence

Chapter 1: The Truth Buried in Silence
Nathan Harrison sat alone in his penthouse office long after the city lights had blurred into the night.
The ultrasound photo trembled between his fingers.
Twins.
His twins.
He stared at the date printed on the faded image.
It had been taken just three weeks before the divorce became final.
His heart pounded.
"No..."
He grabbed the divorce file and flipped through every page. The settlement agreement. The court records. His lawyer's notes.
There was nothing about a pregnancy.
Nothing.
Nathan picked up his phone and dialed his former attorney.
"I need every document related to my divorce. Every email. Every phone record. Tonight."
An hour later, the answer arrived.
Someone had intercepted several certified letters sent by Emily.
Medical records.
Pregnancy reports.
Requests to postpone the divorce hearing.
None of them had ever reached Nathan.
Instead, they had been redirected by his own executive assistant, Vanessa.
She had secretly been working with Nathan's jealous father, Richard Harrison.
Richard had believed Emily was beneath the Harrison family name.
If Nathan learned about the babies, he would never agree to the divorce.
So they made sure he never did.
Nathan's breathing became uneven.
Emily hadn't abandoned him.
She had been abandoned by everyone around him.
...
Across town, Emily tucked Noah and Liam into their small bed after splitting the bakery bread into tiny pieces for tomorrow's breakfast.
She waited until the boys were asleep before allowing herself to cry.
The tears came silently.
She remembered standing outside Nathan's office years ago with ultrasound photos in her purse.
Security had refused to let her inside.
"Mr. Harrison doesn't wish to see you."
She had begged.
She had pleaded.
Eventually she stopped trying.
Not because she stopped loving him.
Because she believed he had chosen to forget them.
The knock on her apartment door startled her.
She looked through the peephole.
Nathan.
She didn't open it.
"You've already made your choice," she whispered through the wood.
"You left us."
Nathan rested his forehead against the door.
May you like
"No, Emily."
"I never knew."
