Chapter 2: The Truth She Could No Longer Hide

Chapter 2: The Truth She Could No Longer Hide
The nursery fell silent except for the baby's frightened cries.
Margaret stared at her son, unable to believe he had pushed her away.
"You shoved your own mother?" she whispered.
Christopher didn't answer.
He bent down and gently helped his trembling wife, Emily, to her feet. Her scalp burned where clumps of hair had been ripped out. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she reached for the baby.
The little boy quieted almost instantly the moment he was back in his mother's arms.
Christopher noticed the bruise already forming near Emily's temple.
His stomach turned.
"Did she do this?"
Emily hesitated.
Margaret answered for her.
"She deserved it."
Christopher slowly looked at his mother.
"What did you just say?"
"I said she deserved it!" Margaret snapped. "Ever since she married you, she's stolen you away from your family. She's weak. She's manipulating you. She doesn't deserve this house... and she certainly doesn't deserve my grandson."
Emily finally spoke.
"I never wanted to tell you."
Christopher frowned.
"Tell me what?"
Emily wiped away her tears.
"This wasn't the first time."
His face drained of color.
She walked toward the dresser and opened the bottom drawer.
Hidden beneath folded baby blankets was a small envelope.
Inside were photographs.
Bruises on her wrists.
Finger marks around her upper arm.
A cracked picture frame from two months earlier.
A shattered coffee mug.
Christopher flipped through them in stunned silence.
"You... documented this?"
Emily nodded.
"I hoped she'd stop."
Margaret laughed bitterly.
"Oh please. Those are accidents."
Then Emily pulled out something else.
A small digital voice recorder.
"I started carrying this after she threatened me last month."
Christopher pressed Play.
Margaret's voice filled the room.
"If you ever tell Christopher what happens when he's at work... I'll make sure you never see your baby again."
Silence.
Christopher looked up.
His mother wasn't denying it anymore.
For the first time in his life...
He didn't recognize the woman standing in front of him.
"I'm calling the police."
Margaret's confident expression finally cracked.
"You wouldn't."
Christopher pulled out his phone.
"I already am."
Within minutes, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the front windows.
Officers entered the home.
After listening to the recording, photographing Emily's injuries, and interviewing both women separately, they escorted Margaret outside.
She screamed the entire way.
"This is your wife's fault!"
"You'll regret this!"
Christopher never looked back.
Instead...
He closed the front door.
Locked it.
Then held his wife and son tighter than he ever had before.

For the first time in months...
They were finally safe.
