Chapter 4: The Reckoning

The trap was set at the annual winter gala of the Chicago Symphony—a high-society event where Preston Whitcomb believed he could re-establish his standing, confident that his daughter's marriage to a DeLuca had bought his safety.

The ballroom was a sea of crystal chandeliers, silk gowns, and tuxedos.

Enzo entered with Harper on his arm. She looked breathtaking in a custom-made, emerald green velvet gown. It had long sleeves and a high collar that draped elegantly around her neck, but the fabric hugged her curves, and for the first time, she walked with her head held high.

Whispers rippled through the crowd. Preston Whitcomb, standing near the champagne fountain with a group of nervous-looking investors, froze when he saw them.

Enzo guided Harper directly toward him.

"Preston," Enzo said, his voice smooth as silk but dangerous as a razor blade. "You look well for a man on the brink of ruin."

Preston tried to maintain his arrogant sneer, but his eyes darted nervously to Harper. "Harper, darling. You look... recovered. I trust your husband is treating you with the respect you deserve?"

The subtle threat in his voice was clear, but before Harper could flinch, Enzo stepped slightly in front of her, cutting off Preston's line of sight.

"She is treated like a queen," Enzo said, his eyes turning to ice. "Which is a stark contrast to how she was treated under your roof."

Preston’s face paled. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"The federal authorities do," Harper said, stepping up beside Enzo. Her voice didn't tremble. She looked her father dead in the eye, the ghosts of her past finally losing their grip on her. "I gave Enzo the ledgers, Father. Every offshore account, every bribe, and the direct wire transfers to the three men who murdered Nathan DeLuca. The FBI is raiding your offices as we speak."

Preston’s hand began to shake, spilling champagne onto his expensive sleeve. "You ungrateful little brat," he hissed, taking a step toward her, his arm instinctively rising as if to strike. "After everything I gave you—"

Enzo caught Preston’s wrist mid-air.

The grip was tight enough to crush bone. The surrounding guests fell silent, sensing the sudden, lethal tension.

"Touch her again," Enzo whispered, leaning in close so only Preston could hear, "and the FBI won't get the chance to lock you away. I will take you to the same riverbank where my brother died, and I will tear you apart piece by piece. Do you understand me?"

Preston gasped for air, his face turning red, then white, as he nodded frantically.

Enzo released him, pulling a white handkerchief from his pocket to wipe his hand as if he had touched something toxic. Seconds later, three federal agents in suits stepped through the ballroom doors, heading straight for the disgraced billionaire.

As they led Preston away in handcuffs, his desperate protests echoing through the silent hall, Enzo turned to Harper.

She was breathing heavily, but she wasn't crying. A single, triumphant tear slipped down her cheek, and she let out a breath she seemed to have been holding her entire life.
