Chapter 1: The Weight of truth

The silence in the master suite was deafening, broken only by the sound of Harper’s ragged, terrified breathing.
Enzo stood frozen, his hands suspended in the air. The ruthless mafia boss who had built an empire on cold calculations and unbreakable resolve felt a sudden, sickening void open in his chest. His gaze lingered on the crisscrossing lattice of silver and red scars marking the pale skin of her back. They weren’t the result of a single accident. They were deliberate, repeated, and old.
"I'm sorry," she whispered again, her voice cracking as she pressed her forehead against the polished wood of the floor. "I’ll clean it up. The pearls. I’ll find them all. Just... please."
A dark, boiling rage ignited in Enzo’s veins, but for the first time in his life, it wasn’t directed at the person in front of him. It was directed outward, across the city, toward the penthouse where Preston Whitcomb was likely celebrating his survival.
Slowly, deliberately, Enzo knelt. He took off his heavy wool suit jacket, holding it out like a shield.
"Harper," he said. His voice, usually a low, commanding rumble, was carefully leveled. "Look at me."
She flinched at her name, but slowly turned her tear-streaked face toward him. Her blue-gray eyes were wide with a primal terror that made his stomach twist.
"I don't use belts," Enzo said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "I don't lay hands on women. And I will never, under any circumstances, hurt you."
He gently draped his jacket over her shoulders, covering the torn dress and the horrific map of her father's cruelty. The fabric was warm, smelling of cedar and rain. Harper wrapped it around herself, trembling so hard her teeth literally rattled.
"I'm going to carry you to the bed," Enzo murmured, moving slowly so she could see every shift of his weight. "May I?"
She didn't answer, but she didn't pull away when he slid one arm under her knees and the other behind her back. She felt impossibly light, like a bird made of hollow bones. As he lifted her, she squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for a pain that never came.
He laid her gently on the silk sheets of the king-sized bed. Standing back, he pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed a number he kept on speed dial.
"Marco," Enzo said when his underboss answered. "Cancel the guards' rotation. No one enters the main house tonight. And call Dr. Rossi. Tell her to bring a medical kit for lacerations and trauma. Tell her to come to the back entrance, and if she breathes a word of this to anyone, I’ll personally put her in the river."
May you like
He hung up without waiting for a reply. When he looked back at the bed, Harper had curled into a tight ball under his jacket, her eyes locked on him, watching his every move like a prey animal watching a predator.
"You're safe here, Harper," Enzo said, though the words tasted like ash in his mouth. He had brought her here to destroy her. Now, looking at the broken pieces of the girl he was supposed to ruin, he realized the real monster was still out there, breathing free.
