Chapter 2: The Line No One Could Cross

Chapter 2: The Line No One Could Cross

"Get out," Daniel repeated, louder this time.

The words echoed through the study like a judge's final verdict.

Margaret laughed once—a short, disbelieving sound.

"You cannot possibly mean that."

Daniel never looked at her.

His attention remained on Ava as he carefully brushed a strand of hair away from her bruised forehead.

"I said," he replied calmly, "leave this room before I have security remove you."

Margaret's composure cracked.

"You would humiliate your own mother over a manipulative woman who has poisoned your mind?"

Rosa struggled to her feet despite the pain in her jaw.

"Mr. Sterling..." she whispered. "Mrs. Ava never attacked anyone."

Margaret spun toward the maid.

"You little liar!"

She raised her hand again.

This time, Daniel caught her wrist before it could land.

The entire room froze.

Never in his forty-two years had Daniel laid a hand on his mother.

He didn't squeeze.

He didn't shove.

He simply held her wrist firmly enough to stop the blow.

"No more."

His voice was frighteningly quiet.

"No more lies."

Margaret slowly pulled her hand back.

"You believe a servant?"

"I believe evidence."

Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

"I came home earlier than expected because my flight from Chicago was canceled halfway through boarding."

He pressed the screen.

"I've been inside this house for nearly twelve minutes."

Margaret frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"I parked in the underground garage."

Another tap.

"I entered through the service hallway."

The study's television suddenly came to life.

Black-and-white security footage filled the screen.

The timestamp showed exactly eleven minutes earlier.

Margaret's confident smile disappeared.

The hidden camera above the hallway outside the study had recorded everything.

Every shove.

Every slap.

Every insult.

The moment Ava's wheelchair was kicked sideways.

The moment Rosa tried to protect her.

The moment Margaret forced the medicine toward Ava's mouth.

No audio was needed.

The images told the entire story.

Silence consumed the room.

Margaret stared at the screen as though it belonged to someone else.

Daniel spoke without raising his voice.

"I watched every second before I walked in."

For the first time in decades...

Margaret had no lie left.

Within minutes, the mansion filled with people.

Security officers.

The family physician.

Daniel's personal attorney.

A forensic photographer.

Margaret stood in the center of the study while everyone worked around her as though she no longer belonged there.

She had ruled this estate for almost forty years.

Tonight...

She wasn't even being consulted.

Dr. Harris gently examined Ava.

"Her ribs are badly bruised."

He looked toward Daniel.

"She also shows signs of repeated physical abuse."

Daniel slowly lifted his head.

"Repeated?"

The doctor nodded.

"Some bruises are fresh."

He hesitated.

"Others are several weeks old."

Daniel felt the floor disappear beneath him.

He looked at Ava.

She couldn't meet his eyes.

"I didn't want you to lose your family," she whispered.

Daniel closed his eyes.

He realized the greatest betrayal wasn't what his mother had done.

It was that Ava had believed she had to suffer alone to protect him.
