Chapter 1: The Son Who Finally Saw the Truth

"Get out."

Daniel's voice remained calm.

That frightened Margaret more than if he had screamed.

She stared at her son, waiting for the hesitation that had always followed every confrontation between them. It never came.

"Daniel," she said carefully, "you don't understand what you've walked into."

"I understand enough."

He stood slowly, still supporting Ava in his arms. His expensive jacket was stained with spilled medicine, but he didn't seem to notice.

"I asked you one question years ago," Daniel said quietly.

Margaret frowned.

"I asked whether my father ever regretted changing his will."

A flicker crossed Margaret's eyes.

"You looked me in the eye and said no."

She remained silent.

Daniel looked toward Rosa.

"Tell me exactly what happened."

The young maid hesitated.

Margaret shot her a warning glare.

Daniel noticed.

"No one threatens anyone in this room anymore."

Rosa swallowed hard.

"Mrs. Margaret said Mrs. Ava needed stronger medication."

"I told her I wasn't sick," Ava whispered weakly.

"They held me down."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Rosa continued.

"Mrs. Ava refused to sign those papers."

Daniel slowly picked up the blue folder from the floor.

He opened it.

Every page transferred Ava's controlling shares into a trust administered solely by Margaret.

One signature.

That was all it required.

His hands trembled.

"You planned this."

Margaret finally dropped the performance.

"It was necessary."

"For whom?"

"For this family."

Daniel laughed.

It was a hollow sound.

"No."

May you like

He looked directly into her eyes.

"For your control."
