Chapter 1: The Witness They Tried to Silence

Chapter 1: The Witness They Tried to Silence
The ballroom remained frozen as officers dragged Victor Reynolds toward the exit.
"You've got the wrong man!" he shouted, twisting against the handcuffs. "That footage doesn't prove anything!"
But no one answered.
Every guest had seen it.
Every camera had captured it.
Emily, the eight-year-old flower girl, clung tightly to her mother. Her tiny hands trembled, and tears streaked across her cheeks. She still didn't understand why a grown man had wanted everyone to believe she was a thief.
Then another voice broke the silence.
"Wait."
An elderly waiter stepped forward.
"I saw him before the ceremony."
The room turned toward him.
The waiter explained that nearly thirty minutes before the reception, Victor had been wandering through the ballroom alone. He wasn't looking for his seat.
He was checking every security camera.
At the time, everyone assumed he was simply curious.
Now they understood.
He had been planning everything.
One detective immediately requested recordings from the hallway cameras outside the ballroom.
Minutes later, another video appeared.
Victor could be seen removing his own phone from his pocket, placing it inside a white envelope, and hiding it beneath a serving table before the ceremony even began.
Gasps echoed through the hall.
"He never lost his phone," someone whispered.
"He created the theft."
The detective slowly closed his notebook.
"This wasn't a misunderstanding."
"It was premeditated."
Victor lowered his head for the first time.

He realized the evidence was no longer against him.
It was surrounding him.
