Chapter 2: The Family That Protected a Monster

The handcuffs clicked shut.

It was the loudest sound Evelyn had ever heard.

Preston stared at his parents.

"Say something."

"Dad..."

"Mom..."

Neither moved.

Because for the first time in thirty-four years...

Excuses no longer mattered.

Evidence had replaced opinions.

His new bride slowly removed her wedding ring.

Tears streamed down her face.

"You framed a child."

"You hit her."

"I married someone I don't even recognize."

She placed the ring on the reception table and walked away without looking back.

Outside the ballroom, detectives interviewed guests one by one.

Several admitted they had always seen Preston bully others.

A former college roommate confessed Preston had once planted stolen exam answers in another student's backpack.

A cousin admitted family members had spent years quietly covering for him.

Small lies.

Broken property.

Fake apologies.

Each incident had been dismissed as "boys being boys."

Until one day...

The victim became a child.

Meanwhile, Sophie sat inside the emergency room holding Evelyn's hand.

"Mommy..."

"Was it my fault?"

Evelyn immediately shook her head.

"No, sweetheart."

"Bad people often blame innocent people."

"That doesn't make the innocent guilty."

Sophie rested her head against her mother's shoulder.

"I was scared."

"I know."

"But you still told the truth."

"And that's what courage looks like."

Three weeks later, prosecutors filed multiple charges.

Child abuse.

Felony battery.

Filing a false police report.

Evidence tampering.

During discovery, detectives uncovered even more.

Preston had recently lost nearly two million dollars through reckless investments.

His phone contained messages discussing life insurance, unpaid loans, and plans to convince their parents to rewrite their will.

Framing Evelyn had never been about a phone.

He wanted to destroy her credibility before asking their parents to cut her completely out of the family estate.

Everything had been calculated.

Everything...

Except the cameras.
