Chapter 1: The Footage No One Could Deny

The ambulance arrived just as the ballroom erupted into nervous whispers.

Paramedics rushed toward Sophie, carefully wrapping a white bandage around the cut on her head.

"It'll need stitches," one of them said. "She's lucky the impact wasn't lower."

Lucky.

The word echoed bitterly inside Evelyn's mind.

A hotel security supervisor hurried across the ballroom, followed by two police officers.

"Who reported an assault?" one officer asked.

"I did," Evelyn answered without hesitation.

She pointed directly at Preston.

"He attacked my daughter."

Preston laughed.

"This is ridiculous."

"That little girl stole my phone."

"My sister is trying to ruin my wedding because she's always been jealous."

Their mother nodded immediately.

"It's true."

"Evelyn has always been... emotional."

Several relatives murmured in agreement.

The officer remained expressionless.

"Sir," he said to the security supervisor, "does this ballroom have surveillance?"

"It does."

"Four cameras."

"Every entrance."

"The dance floor."

"And the head table."

For the first time all evening...

Preston's confidence flickered.

"Actually," he interrupted quickly, "there's no need to waste everyone's time."

The supervisor looked confused.

"I'm afraid there is."

"Whenever there's an assault allegation, hotel policy requires us to preserve all recordings."

Within minutes, the ballroom projector was connected to the hotel's security system.

More than two hundred guests remained frozen in their seats.

No music.

No conversation.

Only silence.

The footage began.

Camera One showed Sophie sitting quietly beside her mother.

She colored on the children's activity sheet while swinging her feet beneath the chair.

She never approached the head table.

Never left Evelyn's side.

The room grew uneasy.

Camera Three switched to the reception entrance.

Preston walked casually past Sophie's chair while everyone watched the newlyweds pose for photographs.

He glanced around.

Reached into his tuxedo pocket.

Pulled out his titanium iPhone.

Then...

With one smooth movement...

He slipped it into the pocket of Sophie's denim jacket.

Gasps swept through the ballroom.

Someone whispered,

"Oh my God..."

The recording continued.

Only thirty seconds later...

Preston dramatically patted his pockets.

Grabbed the microphone.

Announced his phone was missing.

Then walked straight toward Sophie.

Exactly as if he already knew where it would be found.

Every face in the ballroom turned toward him.

His mother took one slow step backward.

His father's face drained of color.

The bride covered her mouth.

"No..."

she whispered.

"I didn't know..."

But the video wasn't finished.

Camera Two captured everything after Evelyn refused to apologize.

It showed Preston tearing the heavy oak menu from its display.

Raising it over his shoulder.

And striking an eight-year-old child with enough force to knock her to the floor.

There was no accident.

No self-defense.

No confusion.

Only rage.

The screen went black.

Silence consumed the ballroom.

Then the police officer calmly turned toward Preston.

"Sir."

"Place your hands behind your back."

May you like

"This is no longer a family matter."

"It's a criminal investigation."
