Chapter 3 – The Family That Chose the Wrong Side

Preston screamed.

"This is ridiculous!"

"My own niece framed me!"

No one believed him anymore.

Not after the video.

Not after watching him carefully plant the phone.

The officers secured his wrists with handcuffs.

The metallic click echoed through the ballroom.

My mother rushed forward.

"Please."

"He's a good man."

"He just made one mistake."

The older officer looked directly at her.

"Ma'am."

"He assaulted a child."

"He fabricated evidence."

"And he attempted to blame the victim."

"Those aren't mistakes."

"They're crimes."

For the first time all evening...

Someone said exactly what needed to be said.

The bride slowly removed her wedding ring.

Everyone watched.

She stared at Preston as tears filled her eyes.

"You used me."

"You turned our wedding into your revenge."

"I don't even know who you are."

She placed the ring on the gift table.

Then quietly walked away.

Without looking back.

Several guests applauded.

Others simply shook their heads.

The reception ended without another dance.

Outside the ballroom...

I rode with Sophie to the hospital.

Eight stitches.

A mild concussion.

Doctors assured me she would recover completely.

While Sophie slept...

My phone rang nonstop.

Unknown numbers.

Family members.

Relatives who had ignored us for years.

Now they wanted to explain.

To justify.

To smooth everything over.

I answered only one call.

My father.

"Evelyn..."

"You have to convince Sophie not to testify."

I closed my eyes.

"You watched your granddaughter bleed."

Silence.

Then he whispered...

"He's still my son."

I looked through the hospital window at Sophie sleeping beneath a warm blanket.

"And she's my daughter."

I hung up.

That was the last conversation I ever had with either of my parents.

Weeks passed.

The criminal investigation expanded.

Detectives discovered Preston had planned everything.

Text messages.

Deleted searches.

Even conversations with a friend complaining that I was "stealing the family's attention" because Sophie had recently received an academic scholarship.

He wanted to humiliate us.

Publicly.

Permanently.

May you like

Instead...

He destroyed himself.
