Chapter 2 – The Footage No One Could Deny

The ambulance arrived within minutes.

Paramedics pushed through the frozen crowd while wedding guests quietly stepped aside.

Sophie's white flower-girl dress had turned crimson along one shoulder.

A medic gently parted her hair.

"There it is."

The room collectively inhaled.

A deep cut.

Blood still flowing.

"She needs stitches."

He looked toward me.

"Did someone hit her?"

Before I could answer...

Three hotel security officers entered the ballroom.

Their manager followed close behind.

A middle-aged woman wearing a navy suit and a silver name badge.

"I am Karen Mitchell, Director of Security."

Her calm voice carried through the silent room.

"We received reports that a child was assaulted."

Preston immediately stepped forward.

"It was an accident."

Karen didn't even look at him.

Instead, she knelt beside Sophie.

Her expression hardened.

Then she slowly stood.

"I'll need everyone involved to remain here."

Preston forced a laugh.

"This is just a family misunderstanding."

Karen folded her hands.

"No."

"This is a possible felony."

The word struck the room like lightning.

Felony.

Suddenly the wedding no longer mattered.

The music remained silent.

Guests began whispering.

Some discreetly pulled out their phones.

Preston glanced toward our parents.

They immediately rushed to his defense.

"My son was provoked."

My father spoke firmly.

"The little girl stole his phone."

Karen nodded politely.

"Interesting."

She turned toward another security employee.

"Please retrieve footage from Ballroom Three."

Preston froze.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

His eyes flickered toward the ceiling.

Toward the tiny black camera above the entrance.

Karen noticed it too.

"You seem concerned, Mr. Whitmore."

"I'm not concerned."

His answer came too quickly.

"I just don't appreciate being treated like a criminal."

Karen smiled politely.

"The cameras will answer everyone's questions."

Twenty minutes later...

Nearly every wedding guest remained inside the ballroom.

No one wanted to leave.

Large television screens used earlier for the couple's childhood photos now displayed the hotel's surveillance feed.

The timestamp appeared.

6:42 p.m.

The ballroom before dinner.

Guests finding their seats.

Servers arranging champagne.

Sophie coloring quietly beside me.

Exactly where I remembered.

Karen paused the video.

"There."

The camera zoomed.

Preston walked toward our table.

He looked over both shoulders.

Reached into his tuxedo pocket.

Pulled out his titanium iPhone.

Then calmly slipped it into the pocket of Sophie's denim jacket.

The room exploded.

"No..."

Someone whispered.

"Oh my God..."

Several guests covered their mouths.

The bride turned white.

My mother staggered backward.

My father's face completely drained of color.

Karen resumed the recording.

Minutes later...

Preston dramatically announced his missing phone.

Demanded everyone remain seated.

Walked directly toward Sophie.

Reached into the exact pocket where he had hidden it.

Pulled it out.

Pretended to be shocked.

Frame by frame...

Every lie collapsed.

Then came the final video.

The assault.

Everyone watched Preston rip the heavy oak menu board from its stand.

Raise it over his shoulder.

Swing it directly into the side of an eight-year-old child's head.

No hesitation.

No accident.

No self-defense.

Only rage.

The ballroom became deathly quiet.

Karen slowly turned off the screen.

"I believe we've seen enough."

Two Chicago police officers stepped forward.

One looked directly at Preston.

"Sir..."

May you like

"Turn around."

"You are under arrest."
