Chapter 14: The Last Betrayal

I refused to believe Daniel was involved.

He had preserved the backup footage.

He had exposed my father’s role.

He had helped the police from the beginning.

Then Maya showed me the estate video.

The man entering my father’s office had Daniel’s height.

Daniel’s suit.

Daniel’s security badge.

But when the figure turned toward the camera, something was wrong.

“He’s wearing a mask,” I said.

Maya froze the image.

The face looked like Daniel’s from a distance.

Up close, the skin around the jaw didn’t move naturally.

A silicone disguise.

The badge number belonged to Daniel, but the real badge had never left his possession.

Someone had copied it.

The figure carried the black folder to a waiting car.

The license plate was registered to the Hartwell legal department.

The company’s senior attorney, Charles Vance, had managed my grandmother’s false will.

He had notarized corporate documents for decades.

And he was scheduled to deliver my forged transfer agreement the morning after the wedding.

Police found Charles at O’Hare Airport preparing to board a flight to Switzerland.

The black folder was inside his luggage.

It contained every attempt my family had made to discredit me.

Private investigators had followed me for years.

My phone had been monitored.

My bank accounts had been reviewed.

My father had collected photographs of Sophie’s school, our house, and David’s grave.

The final page contained the complete wedding plan.

Step one: Plant Preston’s phone in Sophie’s jacket.

Step two: Publicly accuse her.

Step three: Remove Evelyn from the hotel.

Step four: Recover the audit drive.

Step five: Enter Evelyn’s room and destroy all copies.

Step six: File the forged share transfer.

Step seven: Release edited ballroom footage portraying Evelyn as unstable.

Step eight: Petition the court for temporary custody of Sophie if Evelyn resisted.

They hadn’t intended only to take my company shares.

They planned to take my daughter.

Charles agreed to testify in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.

His testimony connected my parents to the embezzlement, the forged documents, the attempt to erase hotel footage, and David’s death.

Preston also agreed to cooperate.

He confessed to planting the phone.

He confessed to searching Sophie’s jacket.

He confessed to stealing foundation money.

He refused to excuse what he had done in the ballroom.

“I wanted Evelyn humiliated,” he said in his recorded statement. “I wanted everyone to choose me again. When she said no, I lost control.”

The prosecutor asked why.

Preston looked toward the floor.

“Because no one had ever taught me that no was an answer.”

The criminal cases moved forward.

My father faced the most serious charges.

My mother faced conspiracy, fraud, forgery, obstruction, and attempted theft of Sophie’s trust.

Charles Vance faced fraud and evidence tampering.

Preston faced financial crimes and charges connected to Sophie.

The trial began eight months later.

On the final day, the prosecutor played the wedding CCTV for the jury.

The footage showed the planted phone.

My father pointing toward the hidden pocket.

My mother removing the jacket.

Preston lifting the menu board.

The courtroom became completely silent.

Then the prosecutor paused the video on Preston’s smile.

The same satisfied smile I had seen before everything changed.

When the jury returned, Sophie held my hand.

The foreperson stood.

“We find the defendants…”

He paused.

And for the first time, my family could not control what happened next.
