Chapter 12: The Golden Son Breaks

The abandoned marina stood beneath an old steel bridge.

Police established a perimeter before sunset.

Maya wanted me to remain in the command vehicle

.

My father had demanded that I come alone with Lauren and the trust documents.

Instead, officers fitted me with a hidden microphone.

Lauren carried copies of the documents.

The originals remained with the prosecutor.

We approached the boathouse together.

The river moved darkly beneath the dock.

Inside, Sophie sat on a wooden bench.

Her hands were free.

Preston remained tied to the chair.

My father stood beside a metal container filled with fuel.

“You brought the documents?” he asked.

Lauren held up the folder.

“Let Sophie come to us.”

Martin smiled.

“You don’t make the rules.”

Sophie looked at me.

I forced myself to remain calm.

“I’m here, sweetheart.”

Preston lifted his head.

“Evelyn, don’t give him anything.”

My father struck the back of his chair.

“Be quiet.”

For the first time in my life, Preston looked small.

Not innocent.

Not helpless.

But broken.

“You planned this with him,” I said.

Preston’s eyes filled with shame.

“I planned the phone.”

“You framed my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“You searched her jacket for the drive.”

“Yes.”

“You attacked her.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Each answer sounded like a stone falling.

“But I didn’t take her from the hospital,” he said. “Dad did.”

My father laughed.

“You wore the scrubs.”

“You threatened me.”

“And you obeyed.”

Preston looked at Sophie.

“I thought he wanted the drive. When we reached the warehouse, he told me he was going to use her to control Evelyn.”

“So you grew a conscience?” I asked.

“Too late.”

The words silenced him.

My father held out his hand.

“The documents.”

Lauren stepped forward.

“Why do you need them? Ruth’s trust is already filed with the bank.”

Martin’s expression changed.

He hadn’t known.

“That’s impossible.”

“It’s over,” I said.

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“Nothing is over until I say it is.”

He reached for Sophie.

Preston threw his body sideways.

The chair crashed into my father’s legs.

Sophie ran toward me.

Police lights appeared through the boathouse windows.

“Chicago Police!” Maya shouted. “Drop your weapon!”

Martin pulled a handgun from his coat.

Preston, still tied to the chair, drove his shoulder into him.

The gun slid across the floor.

Officers stormed inside.

I pulled Sophie against me.

My father was forced to the ground and handcuffed.

Preston stared at us from beside the overturned chair.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Sophie buried her face against my chest.

Then Maya’s radio crackled.

A detective had searched my parents’ estate.

They found a hidden room behind my father’s office.

Inside were records connected to David’s death.

And a second forged document.

This one transferred Sophie’s future trust directly to Preston.

My mother’s signature appeared beneath it.

May you like

She had not been manipulated by my father.

She had been planning beside him from the beginning.
