Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Necklace

Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Necklace
Police officers arrived less than ten minutes later.
The ballroom doors were quietly locked.
No one was allowed to leave.
Detective Maria Collins replayed the footage several times.
"Zoom in on the woman."
The image sharpened.
Several guests immediately recognized her.
"That's Olivia."
"Richard's executive assistant."
"But... she called in sick today."
The detective wasn't convinced.
"Find her."
Before officers could leave, another member of the hotel security team interrupted.
"There's more footage."
The detective turned.
"What do you mean?"
"We checked the hallway cameras."
A second recording appeared.
Olivia entered Richard's private office nearly an hour before the gala.
She wasn't alone.
Richard was already inside.
Neither realized the office camera recorded both video and audio.
Richard opened a black safe hidden behind a painting.
He removed the diamond necklace himself.
Then handed it directly to Olivia.
His voice echoed through the ballroom speakers.
"Put it in the girl's pocket after dinner."
Olivia hesitated.
"What if someone notices?"
"They won't."
Richard smiled.
"People always believe the richest man in the room."
The ballroom erupted.
Several board members of the Ashford Children's Foundation immediately stood.
One of them removed his foundation pin and dropped it onto Richard's table.
Another quietly said,
"I resign."
Within minutes, nearly every donor followed.
Million-dollar pledges disappeared before Richard's eyes.
Police officers handcuffed Olivia first.
Then Detective Collins approached Richard.
"You are under arrest for conspiracy, assault on a minor, filing a false police report, and evidence tampering."
Richard finally looked at me.
His voice cracked.
"I never meant for her to get hurt."
Lily, still sitting beside me, looked directly at him.
"You hit me because you thought nobody would believe me."
Richard lowered his head.
